In between shutting down schools and putting mom-and-pop shops out of business, California Gov. Gavin Newsom made sure to clear his calendar to attend a birthday fête at the high-end restaurant The French Laundry.
It appears to be among the places where COVID-19 safety rules are not on the menu.
According to reporting from the San Francisco Chronicle, Newsom was dining at the triple Michelin-starred eatery as part of an exclusive birthday dinner for his favorite lobbyist and longtime advisor, Jason Kinney.
The dinner included people from several households, the type of gathering his administration has discouraged during the coronavirus pandemic.
No word if the birthday boy did a quick COVID-19 test before he blew out all the candles on his birthday cake.
But, in Gavin’s defense, most of the guests at the party likely greeted each other with air kisses.
A meal at the super-exclusive, very expensive restaurant costs around $350 per person, not including wine.
Rumor has it they call it The French Laundry because when the waiter brings your bill you feel like you’ve been taken to the cleaners.
I’m sure Newsom worked up quite the appetite, ruining everyone else’s Thanksgiving plans.
The Warden’s latest Thanksgiving Day guidelines decreed that parties be held outdoors, with guests from no more than three households, seated six feet apart, taking off their masks only to eat and drink, and no one is allowed indoors except to use the bathroom.
Sounds about as festive as a parole hearing, right?
He could have made the guidelines a lot shorter by just saying, “No party guests are allowed to have fun.”
And Newsom isn’t the only COVID-19 hypocrite on the planet, either.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was forced to cancel an in-person, indoor dinner for new Democratic members of Congress after pictures of the venue appeared on social media and sparked a backlash.
I’m told that it broke Speaker Pelosi’s heart to have to cancel that dinner.
She’d just had her hair done and looked amazing!
And then you have Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who recently shut down her city.
Just days before her shut-down decree, a mask-less Mayor Lightfoot joined a large crowd of people in her city to celebrate the election of Joe Biden.
Lightfoot defended her actions, by telling MSNBC, “That crowd was gathered whether I was there or not, but this has been a super hard year on everyone. Everyone feels traumatized. They feel threatened, their safety, and they don’t know what tomorrow’s going to bring.”
She also went on to say that “everybody was wearing masks” and that “there are times when we actually do need to have … relief and come together, and I felt like that was one of those times.”
I saw video of the “celebration” too, and it didn’t seem like there was a lot of mask wearing or social distancing to me.
For what it’s worth, over that same weekend, 43 people were shot and eight were killed in the Windy City — up from 29 shot and four killed the week before.
