1. Will.i.am teamed up with a SpaceX designer to create a $300 smart face mask. The face mask is Bluetooth-enabled, and has HEPA filters, built-in headphones and more. Check out the Xupermask — and all its high-tech features — here.
2. Twitter will not let the US National Archives preserve Trump’s tweets on the platform. It’s become custom for NARA to archive former presidents’ social media accounts, but Twitter is preventing the preservation of Trump’s tweets because of his suspension. This is how they’ll preserve the account instead.
3. Employees of Goldman Sachs’ consumer business, Marcus, are quitting in droves. Three chief technology officers and nearly half a dozen other tech leaders have quit, with many citing burnout and “top-down” management. Here’s what spurred an “avalanche” of exits.
4. Lyft’s president supports a higher corporate tax rate to pay for Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure plan. John Zimmer voiced his support for the plan, which would include a 28% corporate tax rate. More on the increase, which he called a “smart investment.”
5. Facebook said the leak of 533 million users’ data wasn’t a hack. Instead, it said the data had been scraped off the platform at some point before September 2019. (Check to see if yours was breached here). This is why that explanation doesn’t add up.
6. A 26-year-old CEO has been crowned the youngest self-made billionaire on Forbes’ annual Billionaires List. Austin Russell, founder of Luminar Technologies, became a billionaire virtually overnight — booting this superstar off Forbes’ list.
7. Clubhouse is looking at a funding round that would value the app at $4 billion — just a year after it launched. The popular audio-only app, which launched in March 2020, was valued at around $1 billion in January. Twitter also considered buying the app for $4 billion, but discussions have since fizzled.
8. Best Buy is targeting Amazon with a new membership service. The retailer announced the program, named Best Buy Beta, will be available at 60 stores within the month. Here’s what’s included in the $200-per-month subscription.
9. The Supreme Court changed the future of software development. On Monday, the US Supreme Court handed Google a monumental victory in its copyright fight against Oracle. Many techies rejoiced, with one declaring “sanity has prevailed.” To help understand what this decision means, we broke down how it will shape the future of software.
10. Google continues its Search leadership shuffle. The company announced several executive changes to its search team, moving some veteran Googlers into new roles as the tech giant aims to bolster its most important product. We took a look at what else it’s doing to invest in Search.
