The West Ranch girls volleyball team knows what it’s like to finish top-three in league, and what it’s like to share a Foothill League title, like it did in 2019.
“It doesn’t feel as good because it ended on a loss and you ended on this loss that makes us share the title,” coach Jamey Ker said. “And so those years I’ve had to do a good job of reminding the girls that it’s still an amazing accomplishment and we’re still league champions. But you can see the look in their eyes, like ‘Yeah, OK, whatever you say, coach.’”
This season, that reminder likely won’t be necessary. If they beat Golden Valley (2-14, 0-8) Tuesday night, the Wildcats will be outright (and undefeated) Foothill League champions for the first time in program history.

With 10 seniors on the team, many of whom Ker coached in club since they were preteens, he felt early on this year’s team was special. The chemistry was good, and he said he was able to push this team harder than previous ones.
“I believe I have the best players in several positions, even the girls that are not starting,” Ker said. “It proves why we’ve improved so much because every day we’re playing a very good team in practice because all 15 girls on the roster are outstanding.”
Outside hitter Kylie Gustin, a senior and captain, has risen to the occasion in big matches, and fellow captain and libero Kaitlyn Jizmejian has locked down the back court every night for the Cats (17-4, 11-0). Kennedy Osunsanmi, a sophomore opposite, has hit over .400 in just about every match and can is capable in both setting and blocking.
Jizmejian is deciding whether to go straight into a nursing program or play for Cal State Northridge. Middle blocker Victoria Davis is deciding between a handful of NCAA Division I programs including Baylor, UCLA, Arizona and LMU.
Each player has been valuable in a competitive Foothill League. Hart and Saugus were tough league opponents this year, both taking West Ranch to five games at least once. But, unlike seasons prior, the Wildcats came out on top every time.
“They’ve tasted that feeling the last couple of years,” said Ker of sharing the league title. “And are now being able to taste this new, much better taste in their mouth is really awesome and it feels very cathartic for a lot of them, especially since there’s so many seniors.”
The Wildcats await their seeding in this year’s CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs. Brackets will be released Saturday at 10 a.m.
