SAN JOSE – Authorities on Tuesday arrested two men on suspicion of taking $2,000 worth of cologne and perfume from a department store at Valley Fair mall in San Jose.
The incident occurred at the Macy’s Women’s & Children’s store, according to police.
Store employees alerted security guards, who in turn contacted the San Jose Police Department. The suspects were arrested in a parking garage at the mall, police said.
Additional details about the incident were not immediately available.
Units are currently at the scene of an attempted theft at the women’s Macy’s at Valley Fair mall.

The arrests follow a string of organized retail thefts that began Friday night, when thieves descended upon stores at San Francisco’s Union Square. Videos posted to social media showed the thieves fleeing the Louis Vuitton store with armloads of goods.
Thieves over the weekend also targeted marijuana dispensaries in Oakland, a Nordstrom store at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek and a Sam’s Jewelers at Southland Mall in Hayward.
The RealReal store in downtown Palo Alto was also targeted Sunday night, but a security guard alerted authorities as 25 to 30 people in 10 to 15 cars approached the business. Nothing was stolen and two suspects were arrested, Palo Alto police said.
Police and malls throughout the Bay Area are taking measures to prepare for the possibility of more incidents. Walnut Creek police Chief Jamie Knox, for instance, has reached out to the FBI, the California Highway Patrol and the U.S. Marshals Service.
“We are alert, we are watching and we are responding,” said San Jose police Sgt. Christian Camarillo.
On Tuesday evening, the Contra Costa, Marin, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Joaquin and San Mateo county district attorney’s offices also announced an alliance to combat the increase in organized retail theft. Each office has pledged a prosecutor to collaborate and participate in the effort, the offices said in a joint statement.
“The recent acts of retail thefts, robberies and mass-mob burglaries throughout Northern California will not be tolerated. These are clearly carefully orchestrated crimes, working together in large groups to create a mob-like mentality,” said Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley.
“They are instilling fear in merchants, customers and the wider community,” she continued. “This is especially appalling at a time where many are out and about during the holiday season. Be assured that those caught and arrested will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
