The New York Yankees will be buyers ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline, and pitching will be a clear need.
The Yankees will look to add a starter but could also look to solidify the bullpen. New York could use another high-leverage reliever, and MLB insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post believes the Yankees are showing interest in Minnesota Twins left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe.
“Twins lefty reliever Danny Coulombe interests the Mets, and he should interest the Yankees, too,” Heyman wrote.
Coulombe is 35 and is a veteran reliever who’s having the best season of his career and likely would be expendable. He’s earning $3 million this season and is a pending free agent.
The 35-year-old is 1-0 with a 0.68 ERA in 35 games while going 2-for-2 on save opportunities. Coulombe also has experience pitching in the AL East. He pitched for the Baltimore Orioles in 2023 and 2024, which is a benefit for the Yankees acquiring him.
If New York does acquire Coluombe, he would join the back end of the Yankees’ bullpen, which features Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and Tim Hill.
Yankees GM Looking to Add Pitching Ahead of Deadline
New York is currently holding onto the second Wild Card spot and is chasing down the Toronto Blue Jays for the division lead.
The clear area of need for the Yankees is pitching, and general manager Brian Cashman says he will look to acquire pitching help.
“Whether it’s bullpen guys or starting pitchers, it’s just all of it,” Cashman said. “That’s the area. We have people that are capable, but I think it also needs to get some help. And if I can do so, great. But again, there’s no guarantees. We’re going to be fully engaged and see where it takes us. Hopefully, we can run into some opportunities that can benefit us.”
New York has dealt with a ton of injuries to their pitching staff as Gerrit Cole is lost for the season, while Luis Gil still has yet to pitch.
With the Yankees looking to be aggressive ahead of the deadline, Cashman is confident he will have the money to acquire the right assets.
“Ultimately, the great thing about the Steinbrenner family is they’re willing — they want to listen to everything the market is willing to bear,” Cashman said. “Hal has always told me, ‘Do not assume anything. Make sure you take everything through me. Explain the thought process by the group and keep me informed.’”
New York entered the All-Star break with a record of 53-43.
Yankees Manager Confident in Team
After the All-Star break, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has confidence that his team is ready to go on a run.
Boone believes New York is built to have a lot of success, as they learned a lot from last season.
“There’s been a lot of good,” Boone said. “There’s obviously been two weeks where we really struggled. But we set out in Spring Training and the start of the year to get back to the playoffs and go chase after a world title. All those hopes and dreams are right there and still exist for us. … A long way to go. Still got to keep getting better. But we’re in a position to do what we need to do.”
The Yankees are on the road to play the Atlanta Braves, before playing the Blue Jays on the road in a pivotal three-game series.
