Insider Makes Bold Stance on Future of Shedeur Sanders as Browns QB

The Cleveland Browns could soon be making a quarterback change.

Dillon Gabriel has been the Browns’ starter, and although Kevin Stefanski has been adamant that he will remain, others think it is time for a change. Gabriel has struggled, and many fans want to see Shedeur Sanders start.

NFL insider Jonathan Jones of CBS believes the Browns will start Sanders sooner rather than later.

“In a lost season, which clearly this is a lost season again for the Cleveland Browns, you are going to see Shedeur,” Jones said. “I thought for a little bit that Dillon Gabriel would be able to hold it off, he was going to play well, and they won’t lose because of Dillon Gabriel.

“It’s hard to say that they didn’t lose today because of Dillon Gabriel, and of course, bad special teams play by the Browns. I don’t know if it’s this upcoming week,” Jones continued. “I don’t know if it’s the next week, but sooner rather than later, I think we will finally see the debut of Shedeur Sanders.”

It’s a bold take from Jones, given that Stefanski has been adamant that Gabriel will remain at quarterback. However, the insider expects Cleveland to make a change to see what they have in Sanders.

The Browns selected Sanders 144th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Browns Sticking With Gabriel

After the Browns’ disappointing 27-20 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, Stefanski said the team wouldn’t be making a quarterback change.

Stefanski has been impressed with Gabriel’s play, as he believes the entire offense needs to be better. But the head coach remains confident in the rookie quarterback.

“Well, I think with young quarterbacks, it’s understanding that there’s going to be ups and downs. You know, can Dillon play better? Yes, he can,” Stefanski said after the game on Sunday. “Can we play better around him? Yes, we can. Can we coach him better? Yes, we can. So, I understand the question, but I just trust that our young players at every position, and certainly at the quarterback position, are guys that are going to work their tails off to get better every single day.”

It’s clear that Stefanski has full faith in Gabriel and will continue to give him every chance to start.

Gabriel has thrown for 869 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions this season.

Insider Believes Stefanski Doesn’t Think Sanders is Ready

Part of the reason why Sanders hasn’t gotten a chance to play is due to the fact that Stefanski doesn’t believe he’s ready, according to one insider.

Browns insider Zac Jackson of The Athletic believes Stefanski isn’t confident in Sanders, which is why he hasn’t started.

“Shedeur Sanders has never been given any chance to play with the No. 1 offense. Aclear sign that Stefanski thinks Sanders isn’t ready,” Jackson wrote. “Sanders was inactive for the New England game with a back issue that kept him out of Monday’s post-bye practice, and Stefanski has insisted that the team is sticking with Gabriel.

“Watson remains on the physically unable to perform list and might be cleared to return to practice later in the season, but there’s been no indication that Cleveland would play Watson even if he’s healthy.”

Whether or not Sanders will get a chance to start games for the Browns this season is to be seen.
