The Dallas Mavericks fired general manager Nico Harrison on Tuesday, November 11, and the list of candidates to replace him is already taking shape.
Plenty of names are being tossed around, including Harrison’s assistant Michael Finley, who will run the team on an interim basis, and former NBA executives looking to get back into a front office. CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn lists one championship-winning general manager who could be a fit in Dallas: Bob Myers.
The former Golden State Warriors general manager and ESPN analyst is currently the president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils and Washington Commanders. He built the roster for four title teams in Golden State and is a name that comes up often when teams are searching for a general manager.
Would Myers return to the front office to guide the Mavericks? Quinn suggests that an ownership group including governor Patrick Dumont should at least make the call. After a debacle with Harrison following his decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas can’t afford to get this hire wrong.
Bob Myers’ Current Role
Myers is currently the president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, which owns the 76ers, Devils and Commanders among other sports properties. He took on the post after working as an NBA analyst for ESPN from 2023-2025.
Since he is responsible for multiple teams, Myers’ role is more of an oversight position as compared to his previous stint as a general manager, which is more of a day-to-day job. If he wanted to return to the grind of the NBA, Myers would certainly be a top candidate for the opening in Dallas. At this juncture, however, it’s unclear if Myers is comfortable leaving his current role, which he officially began in October.
“For the time being, there just isn’t any indication that Myers wants to be a GM again and, even if he does, we don’t know how loose his current contract is,” Quinn wrote.
Bob Myers’ Championship Track Record
Myers’ track record of success in the NBA speaks for itself. He is the architect of a dynasty in Golden State, winning three championships in four seasons with the Warriors from 2015-2018.
With Stephen Curry already in the organization, Myers was an assistant GM who helped draft Klay Thompson in 2011, and after being promoted to general manager in 2012, he selected Draymond Green to round out Golden State’s core. He traded for Andre Iguodala in the summer of 2013 and hired Steve Kerr as head coach in 2014 to set the Warriors on the path to a championship, and he helped Golden State become one of the greatest teams in NBA history by signing Kevin Durant in the summer of 2016.
Quinn thinks Myers is not only a brilliant executive, but also an excellent manager of people who could galvanize the Mavericks following this period of turmoil
“Holding together a dynasty isn’t easy, but Myers did it for nearly a decade. Given some of the less tactful ways Harrison seemingly reshaped the organization in his image, having someone like Myers who would likely be able to rally the staff and gain immediate fan support would be quite valuable,” he wrote.
