Seattle Seahawks Rumored To Lose Coach in Major Shake-up

In the NFL, success can be a double-edged sword. It’s counterintuitive, paradoxical, and yet we see it every year. When one team starts dominating, other teams take notice. Coaches, owners, and front office members will see an outlier and look to counter it, imitate it, and plunder it. The latter typically involves poaching the brains behind successful operations–i.e., stealing the offensive and defensive coordinators.

See the 2024 Detroit Lions, for instance. They lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn in the same offseason, largely due to the team’s blistering success. The 2022 Philadelphia Eagles are another example. They went 14-3 and, like the ’24 Lions, had the greatest average margin of victory in the NFL that season. As a result, OC Shane Steichen and DC Jonathan Gannon both left for head coaching jobs after the season.

The 2025 Seattle Seahawks might be following a similar path. At 7-2, Seattle has the second-best margin of victory in the league, just 0.1 points per game behind the Indianapolis Colts. The Seahawks are dominating, and offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is consequently expected to be the belle of the offseason. Rumors are already swirling that he could leave to become a head coach next season.

Kubiak as a Difference Maker

The numbers speak for themselves. Kubiak, in his first season with Seattle, has fostered one of the league’s most consistent, versatile, and explosive offenses. The Seahawks are scoring 30.6 points per game, which is the third-highest in the NFL and the highest in franchise history. It’s a significant improvement over last season, when the team ranked 17th in scoring. The offense was a major question mark heading into 2025, particularly with new quarterback Sam Darnold.

“While the Seattle Seahawks made a bunch of changes to the players who led the offense this past offseason, perhaps the most important move was hiring offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak,” Lee Vowell writes for 12th Man Rising. “Kubiak probably could have even taken fading quarterback Geno Smith and made him good. He’s helped make Sam Darnold a potential MVP.”

The 38-year-old offensive coordinator is young, inventive, and fits a similar mold to top coaching candidates in previous seasons. Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, and Matt LaFleur all come to mind. There’s still a long way left in the 2025 season, but numerous reports suggest Kubiak will receive interest from teams looking for their next head coach.

2026 Landing Spots

The buzz around Kubiak escalated this week when the New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll. For the Win’s Cory Woodruff listed Kubiak as one of the top candidates for the job.

“After torching defenses with Sam Darnold under center, Kubiak figures to be the hottest coaching candidate in this upcoming cycle,” Woodruff writes. “If he’s intrigued by the trio of Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo as his lead quarterback, wide receiver and running back, New York could be a great landing spot for him come winter.”

Since 2015, at least five head coaches have been fired each season. Sometimes the number of vacancies rises to eight or nine. The Tennessee Titans, the only other team to fire their head coach this season, will presumably be looking for a replacement, too. Teams like Miami, Cleveland, and Cincinnati are reportedly assessing their head coaches as well. One or two surprise teams always make their way into the mix as well.
