Actor David Harbour is turning heads for his radical transformation in his new film “Evil Genius,” directed by Courteney Cox and based on the infamous 2003 âpizza bomberâ case.
The 50-year-old star was recently photographed on the New Jersey set looking almost wholly unrecognizable: sporting graying hair, a thick salt-and-pepper beard, and an entirely altered silhouette thanks to a hefty fat suit beneath casual overalls and a blue-shirt combination.
The film casts Harbour as Brian Douglas Wells, a pizza-delivery man who unwittingly became the centerpiece of one of the most bizarre true-crime stories in recent memory.
The photos of Harbour â far removed from his signature tough-guy persona as Hopper on âStranger Thingsâ â sparked a flood of reactions on social media, with fans marveling at how thoroughly he has shed his familiar image.
A Career of Bold Shapes and Shifts
While Harbour didn’t have to gain weight for the role, he has been very transparent on when he has.
Harbour has built a reputation for diving deep into character work and physical reinvention.
Prior to this, he gained attention for the weight gain and subsequent loss he undertook for the âHellboyâ and âStranger Thingsâ roles.
In a July 2022 post he detailed the weight loss and training he went through prior to shooting one of the seasons of “Stranger Things.”
“Many of you have asked about Hopperâs physical transformation from season 3 to season 4. My trainer @davidhigginslondon worked with me for 8months to make the transformation, and then another year to keep it through the pandemic. All told it was a difficult and exciting ride, changing diet and exercise plans (or lack thereof),” he wrote at the time.
He added, “All this up and down is not good for the body, and Iâll have to give it up soon, but it is such a fun part of the job to live in a different version of your skin for a while.”
All About the New Role
The film has an all-star cast and is being led by the iconic Courteney Cox. She spoke with Deadline about what the project means to her.
âIâve been fascinated by ‘Evil Genius’ since I first saw the documentary,â Cox said. âItâs stranger than fiction. At moments darkly funny and yet deeply emotional.”
She added, “A story about love, loneliness, manipulation, and the people on the fringes who get pulled into something much bigger than themselves.â
The film is also slated to star Patricia Arquette.
