Nintendo has released the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, featuring new characters Rosalina and Bowser Jr.

After several characters leaked on the back of a cookie dough box, Nintendo has confirmed several details about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, in its first full trailer.

The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to take inspiration from the beloved Super Mario Galaxy games – which were both re-released last month on the Nintendo Switch. Although the trailer also shows characters and environments from Super Mario Sunshine and Odyssey.

After the brief announcement teaser in September, Nintendo debuted the first full trailer as part of a dedicated Nintendo Direct today, confirming some new cast members.

The trailer itself is a tad underwhelming, with half of it dedicated to a shrunken Bowser gag following the events of the first film. However, there are some cool shots showing nods to various 3D Mario titles.

Along with classic Mario enemies like Bloopers and Ninjis, the clips shows the Sand Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey. The Megaleg boss from Super Mario Galaxy also pops up at the end which, in the games, is found in the level Bowser Jr’s Robot Reactor.

This makes sense as Bowser Jr. (surprise!) appears to be the main baddie in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. He’s searching for his father following his shrunken fate, and even undergoes a Prowler-esque transformation (from Spider-Man) thanks to some mysterious goop.

The other key new character is Rosalina, who makes light work of Megaleg towards the end of the trailer. Both these characters were leaked beforehand but, mysteriously, Yoshi still hasn’t been shown – despite being featured prominently on the promotional cookie box and a can of Old Spice deodorant.

Bowser Jr., who originally debuted in Super Mario Sunshine, is voiced by Benny Safdie. He’s known for directing films like Uncut Gems and Good Time with his brother Josh, but he’s also starred in Oppenheimer, The Curse, and more recently, Happy Gilmore 2.

Rosalina, meanwhile, is voiced by Brie Larson. She’s best known for playing Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but is a known Nintendo fan – having appeared in adverts for the original Switch.

Larson has asked several times to be cast as Samus Aran in a Metroid movie, and while Rosalina isn’t exactly a feared bounty hunter, there’s a galactic connection at least.

These additions join returning cast members Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek).

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, is set to be released in cinemas worldwide on April 3, 2026.

The first half of 2026 is set to be loaded with Mario-related games to coincide with the film, including a Switch 2 edition of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario Tennis Fever, and Yoshi And The Mysterious Book.

However, there’s still no sign of a new 3D Mario game, with no hint at all at either a follow-up to Super Mario Odyssey or, perhaps, a new Galaxy game.
