NFL Announces Major Seahawks News Ahead of Rams Game

Rookie safety Nick Emmanwori turned a statement game by the Seattle Seahawks defense into his own coming-out party, stuffing the stat sheet and garnering the NFL’s Rookie of the Week Award for his efforts in a 44-22 win over the Arizona Cardinals and earning a public vote of confidence from head coach Mike Macdonald the next day.

Seattle’s defense overwhelmed Arizona from the opening drive, piling up five sacks, 60 tackles, 10 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss and 10 passes defensed while forcing and recovering two fumbles. Those splash plays helped the Seahawks build a huge early lead at Lumen Field and improve to 7-2 on the season.

In the middle of all that chaos was Emmanwori, who led the team with nine tackles and four passes defensed while adding his first career half-sack. The rookie’s all-over-the-field performance was strong enough that the Seahawks later highlighted him as their Week 10 Rookie of the Week, a nod to how quickly he’s becoming a key piece of Macdonald’s defense.

The numbers back it up. Emmanwori consistently closed on the ball, broke up throws down the field and joined the pass rush as part of Seattle’s pressure packages. His half-sack was one snapshot of a day where the Cardinals’ passing game rarely looked comfortable with No. 3 hovering near the action.

Mike Macdonald Praises Emmanwori and Teases More Versatile Role

On Monday, Macdonald made it clear this wasn’t a one-off flash from his rookie. The first-year Seahawks head coach praised Emmanwori’s performance and, more importantly, pointed to how much the staff is already trusting him with multiple responsibilities.

“Nick had a great game,” Macdonald said in a press conference. “We’re moving him from two different spots right now and thinking about maybe another spot. There’s attention to detail on those things. It’s easy to call a lot of the things that we’re putting him into because you have a lot of confidence in him being able to execute those things.”

Macdonald added that, even after a breakout afternoon, this is still about refinement more than reinvention for the rookie. He framed Emmanwori’s growth as a “marginal game thing,” comparing the process to what linebacker Drake Thomas has gone through, with both young defenders trying to become more decisive and anticipatory so their physical traits pop even more on Sundays.

The comments match how Macdonald and outside observers have talked about Emmanwori all season. At 6-foot-3 and around 220 pounds, he has the frame to play in the box like a linebacker while still holding up in coverage, and he has already been deployed at multiple spots, including big nickel and slot roles.

What Emmanwori’s Breakout Means for the Seahawks’ Defense

GettyNick Emmanwori has continued to improve in the Seattle Seahawks defense. He’s playing multiple positions and the rookie is showing why he was a high draft pick in last year’s NFL Draft.

Emmanwori was drafted in the second round in April as a player who could eventually give Macdonald the kind of “defensive unicorn” he had with Kyle Hamilton in Baltimore: a do-it-all piece who can change the structure of a defense based on where he lines up. Through the first half of the season he has piled up double-digit solo tackles, eight quarterback pressures and double-digit stops, and Sunday’s game suggested the Seahawks are ready to lean even harder into that versatility.

His emergence gives Seattle even more flexibility in the secondary alongside players like Devon Witherspoon and Julian Love (after he returns from injury). Macdonald can roll out three-safety looks, disguise coverages pre-snap and send Emmanwori as a blitzer or drop him into coverage against tight ends and bigger slot receivers. That kind of shape-shifting is a big reason the Seahawks’ defense is being discussed as one of the NFL’s most dangerous units heading into the stretch run.

It also arrives at a perfect time. At 7-2, the Seahawks are set for a Week 11 showdown with the Los Angeles Rams, who also sit at 7-2 and have leaned heavily on tight ends in recent weeks. Emmanwori’s size and coverage ability make him an ideal answer for those looks, and if he keeps stacking performances like his Week 10 effort, the rookie will move from under-the-radar piece to centerpiece of Macdonald’s long-term vision for Seattle’s defense.
