The Philadelphia Eagles are trending in the wrong direction, as they suffered their second-straight loss on Black Friday, with the Chicago Bears topping them by a score of 24-15. In the wake of this defeat, a controversial decision made by head coach Nick Sirianni has resulted in him taking a beating from fans in the media once again.
While the Eagles are still 8-4, the product on the field has not always been particularly good this season, which has led to Sirianni facing quite a bit of criticism. That certainly won’t be changing in the wake of this loss, and after the game, Sirianni explained why he opted to go for a two-point conversion after Philadelphia’s late score in the fourth quarter.
Nick Sirianni Pulls Back the Curtain on Two-Point Conversion Decision
For all of the problems that flared up in this game for the Eagles, they still managed to keep the Bears at arm’s length for much of this game. Even when they fell behind 24-9 late in the fourth quarter, there was still a path to at least tying the game for Philadelphia, and it started with scoring a touchdown.
Philadelphia accomplished the first part of the plan when Jalen Hurts connected with A.J. Brown for his second score of the game with 3:10 left in the game. The Eagles, suddenly facing a nine-point deficit, had a big decision to make. Do they kick the extra point and ensure that it will be a one-possession game moving forward, or do they go for the two-point conversion and attempt to cut the deficit to seven points?
Sirianni opted to go for two, and the decision quickly backfired, as Hurts faced pressure and misfired on a pass that was intended for Saquon Barkley. That all but ended Philly’s comeback hopes, as Chicago held onto its nine-point lead, which kept it a two-possession game. Sirianni has faced quite a bit of backlash for this move, and he explained his decision in the aftermath of the loss.
“We had to get a two-point conversion at one point,” Sirianni bluntly said after the game. “I’ve done a lot of studies on that in my notes. Down nine, I’m always gonna go for two in that scenario. I followed the plan. I don’t try to wing anything in situational football. That’s what I wanted to do.”
Did Nick Sirianni Make the Right Two-Point Conversion Decision?

It’s tough to truly say which decision is right in this scenario. Going for two right away allowed Sirianni to take as much control of his situation as he could, because when you are down by seven points, you actually have options in front of you. If you score that potential game-tying touchdown, you could either tie the game with an extra point or you could try to take a one-point lead by going for two once again.
Hindsight is 20/20, and considering how the two-point conversion failed, it’s easy to say Sirianni made the wrong move in this specific scenario. It’s worth noting, though, that kicker Jake Elliott was struggling with the windy conditions, and Philly didn’t find its way into the end zone again, so it ultimately doesn’t matter. All the Eagles can do now is turn their attention to Week 14, where a tough matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers awaits.
