MLB’s hot stove season is here, which means trades are happening all across the league. The New York Mets are expected to be one of the more active teams this offseason, and they’ve already dipped their feet in the trade market by making a big splash for Marcus Semien. In that trade, New York sent away outfielder Brandon Nimmo, a void that they now have to fill.
So, what’s in store for the Mets in the coming months? The MLB winter meetings are early in December, and that’s usually when front offices are at their busiest with either meaningful signings or trades. A recent trade proposal has the Mets making a big splash for Minnesota Twins‘ outfielder Byron Buxton.

Mets-Twins Trade Proposal Lands Byron Buxton
In a recent trade proposal piece by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, the New York Mets are predicted to make another big splash in the trade market by acquiring two-time All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton.
In the proposed trade idea, Reuter has the Mets giving away three prospects in return for Buxton. Shortstop Jett Williams, Jacob Reimer, and southpaw Jonathan Santucci.
Here is the reasoning the BR writer gives for the Mets needing to add a center fielder:
“The Mets got a .210/.284/.314 batting line from their center fielders in 2025, with Tyrone Taylor (85 starts) and deadline pickup Cedric Mullins (34 starts) seeing the bulk of the work, while Jeff McNeil (28 starts) also manned the position on a semi-regular basis for the first time.”

GettyByron Buxton may now be open to waiving his no-trade clause.
It has been reported that Byron Buxton will potentially waive his no-trade clause this offseason if he’s traded to the right suitor. With this massive track package, the Twins would be geared towards the future with three more prospects added to their organization. Minnesota had a fire sale back in July, and that leads many to believe they will offload Byron Buxton and Joe Ryan this offseason to complete the cleaning of the house.

What Value Does Byron Buxton Bring?
Byron Buxton is one of the premier power bats in center field. Injuries have limited his full ability in MLB, but he has played in 100+ games in back-to-back seasons.
In 2025, Buxton was named to his second All-Star appearance, and finished the season with 35 home runs, 83 RBIs, and an OPS+ of 136.
Buxton has spent all 11 seasons of his career in Minnesota and has three years left on his seven-year, $100 million deal.
However, adding Byron Buxton would be an immediate upgrade to the Mets outfield, and as Reuter outlined when proposing this trade, New York received virtually no contributions from its center fielders last season until Jeff McNeil took over.
Also, the Mets front office and ownership have highlighted that they’re focusing on “run prevention” this offseason, and adding a former Platinum Gold Glove winner in Buxton would fast-track that run prevention strategy.
