A midweek snowstorm is forecast to bring up to half a foot of snow to the Denver area and nearly a foot to the mountains, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow could start in Denver as early as 11 p.m. Tuesday, but the city’s strongest chances for winter weather will be between 3 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, according to hourly forecasts from the weather service.
Forecasters expect snow to start in the mountains Tuesday morning before moving into the Denver area and Eastern Plains, according to a hazardous weather outlook.
The heaviest snowfall is forecast for the Park Range of the Rocky Mountains, according to the outlook. Lighter snowfall is expected across the Interstate 25 corridor, Interstate 70 from Denver to Kansas and the Palmer Divide.
Snow will create hazardous travel conditions throughout Wednesday, especially along mountain passes and the I-70 mountain corridor.
As of Monday afternoon, snow forecasts included up to:
- A trace on the northeastern plains, including Julesburg and Sedgwick;
- 5 inches in Broomfield, Boulder, Lafayette and Littleton;
- 6 inches in Arvada, Aurora, Centennial, Commerce City, Denver, Denver International Airport, Estes Park, Golden, Highlands Ranch, Northglenn and Superior;
- 6 inches on I-70’s Floyd Hill, U.S. 40’s Muddy Pass near Kremmling, U.S. 40’s Rabbit Ears Pass near Steamboat Springs, Colorado 125’s Willow Creek Pass near Granby, Colorado 9’s Hoosier Pass near Breckenridge and U.S. 285’s Kenosha Pass near Fairplay;
- 7 inches in Lakewood, Parker, Georgetown, Franktown, Roxborough Park, Evergreen and on the Keystone Ski Area Summit;
- 8 inches on U.S. 6’s Loveland Pass and at Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park;
- 8 inches in Castle Rock and Conifer;
- 9 inches in Eldora and Winter Park, and on U.S. 40’s Berthoud Pass near Winter Park and Colorado 14’s Cameron Pass near Walden;
- 10 inches in Allenspark and on Milner Pass in RMNP;
- And 11 inches on Mount Zirkel, the highest summit of the Park Range.
