Packers Make Big Decision On Injury-Hit Running Back

The Green Bay Packers got a big win on Thanksgiving against the Detroit Lions, whom they beat 31-24, bringing their in-division record to 3-0 on the season.

And whilst they will be riding high heading into week 13, where they will face the NFC North leaders, the Chicago Bears, the team got another boost on Monday.

Per the team’s official transaction wire, second year running back, MarShawn Lloyd, had his 21-day practice window opened to be activated off of injured reserve.

MarShawn Lloyd Has 21-Day Practice Window Opened

“The Packers opened the 21-day windows for RB MarShawn Lloyd and DE Brenton Cox Jr., per the transaction wire.” Matt Schneidman of The Athletic posted on X.

Lloyd has played just 10 snaps of professional football since entering the league as the Packers’ third round draft pick back in 2024. All of those came during a Week 2 game in his rookie year against the Indianapolis Colts, where he rushed 6 times for 15 yards, and caught one pass for 3 yards.
He sprained his ankle in that game, and despite recovering from it in time to return in mid-November, the former USC product was shut down for the year after suffering appendicitis.
Lloyd subsequently suffered a pulled groin in late July at the start of training camp, but was able to return for the pre-season. However, during the bout against the Colts in mid-August, the Delaware native strained his hamstring, which has kept him out for approaching four months.
Brenton Cox, meanwhile, only managed to play 8 snaps of Week 1’s outing against the Lions before suffering a groin injury, which has kept him out of action since then.
Cox had a remarkable strong second season as the team’s rotational edge rusher in 2024, having been bought in as an undrafted free agent back in 2023 – managing 4 sacks in 7 games.

How Will This Impact The Packers’ Rushing Offense?

Green Bay has broadly operated a bell-cow ground attack over the past two years, since All-Pro Josh Jacobs arrived from the Las Vegas Raiders in March 2024.
Even after backup, Emmanuel Wilson handled himself well after taking the lead role during Jacobs’ injury-mandated absence in Week 12’s victory against the Minnesota Vikings, the team went back to Jacobs being handed the lion’s share of the carries.
On Thursday against Detroit, Jacobs carried the ball 17 times to Wilson’s 4, with third stringer and third-down back, Chris Brooks, not managing a single rush attempt.
Some of this is by design; LaFleur wants to get the most out of his strongest back. But it could also be down to a remaining lack of trust in Wilson and Brooks on key run-downs. Indeed, we saw LaFleur gladly run a split-carry backfield over the first half-decade of his tenure in Green Bay when the team had the likes of Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams and AJ Dillon.
With Lloyd having substantial ability, it could be that LaFleur utilizes his return by taking the load off of Jacobs – if he is available for the last month or so of the regular – before the start of the playoffs.
