BREAKING: Mets Signing Devin Williams to $50+ Million Deal

The New York Mets have officially started their offseason free agency spending spree. After not making the 2025 MLB playoffs, the Mets’ front office is thought to be uber aggressive in the winter months to put the best product on the field in 2026.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the New York Mets are signing two-time All-Star reliever Devin Williams to a three-year contract that includes at least $50 million guaranteed. Williams spent his 2025 season with the New York Yankees after being traded last offseason from the Milwaukee Brewers.

New York Mets Sign Devin Williams to $50+ Million Deal

In what is the first major signing from this offseason’s relief pitchers that are free agents, the New York Mets make a big first splash by acquiring Devin Williams, but this is going to really draw question marks about what the Mets will now do with Edwin Diaz’s free agency.

Does this Williams signing mean that the Mets will be unable to retain Edwin Diaz? It will be interesting to see if he is open to pitching in a set-up role with his new “New York” squad.

In 2025, Devin Williams had his worst year as a big leaguer. He recorded 18 saves, but posted a 4.79 ERA in 62 innings. However, he also struck out 90 batters and had a FIP of 2.68, which suggests he got very unlucky.  He lost the closer role multiple times with the Yankees, and it was clear that the chemistry between him and the Yankees was off.

Before the Yankees, Williams had spent six seasons with the Brewers, where he had four straight seasons (2021-2024) of a sub-2.50 ERA. Williams was an All-Star in both 2022 and 2023 and took home the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2020.

For his career, Williams has recorded 86 saves in 308 games pitched, and he has a 2.45 ERA in 297.2 innings pitched.

There’s no doubt this is a big splash for the Mets and their front office, who have now poached a big-time Yankees free agent for the second consecutive season (Juan Soto).

What Will the Mets Receive from Devin Williams?

This is perhaps the biggest question surrounding the MLB world after this signing. As the MLB Winter Meetings approach early this December, the Mets’ front office may have a lot more in store, and Edwin Diaz’s free agency immediately becomes that much more intriguing.

Devin Williams has been used primarily as a closer throughout his career, and so has Edwin Diaz.

The Mets are now betting that Williams had a flukey ERA last season, and his swing-and-miss ability is still very much a big part of his pitching arsenal. He is known for having one of the best changeups in all of baseball.

According to BaseballReference.com, he is projected to post a 3.88 ERA in 58 innings in 2026 and record 14 saves.
