Colts Need To Target This All-Pro Free Agent Wide Receiver

Despite having the sixth-best passing attack in the entire NFL, the Indianapolis Colts do not have the wide receiver depth to keep up their championship-level 8-4 record.

Outside of the outstanding starting three, the Colts’ wide receiver depth is made up of Laquan Tredwell, Anthony Gould, and Ashton Dulin.

The latest news coming out of Minnesota puts a former All-Pro receiver on the market.

“Last week Adam’s representation approached the team and asked if we would be willing to release Adam, expressing his desire to play a bigger role in the remaining weeks of what he has indicated will be his final NFL season,” a Vikings press release read.

Thielen then echoed this sentiment in his own post he shared to his X account. In the post he confirmed that this would be his final season and he would like to retire in Minnesota, but for the time being he is looking for an offense he can make an immediate impact on.

Indianapolis may be just the place for a veteran receiver who is looking to make one final playoff run.

The Colts Need The Help

The Colts don’t win games through the air. They do it on the ground by feeding the league’s leading rusher, Jonathan Taylor.

However, 12-year NFL veteran Adam Thielen is known around the league for his hard-nosed blocking in the run game.

Additionally, this receiver depth is a problem.

In last week’s second consecutive loss, Alec Pierece played all but two snaps on the offensive side of the ball. Michael Pittman Jr. played the second most at an 83% snap share, and Josh Downs was third at 57%.

The only other receiver to see the field was Treadwell, who saw just seven snaps.

Compare this to the team that beat them, the Houston Texans, and you see a more balanced attack. Five receivers saw the field, and many of them posted a similar snap share around the 50% mark. The Texans outgained Indianapolis 276 to 201 through the air.

The Colts need another wide receiver they can trust that can make run-first formations multiple. Adding a solid blocker with strong hands could open up the run and play action game.

Adam Thielen Can Still Play

Despite being released, Adam Thielen can still play. His longtime head coach Kevin O’Connell said his reduced playing time this season was due to “remarkable” injury luck.

“We’ve had pretty remarkable health in that receiving room this year,” O’Connell said. “We were trying to find ways to get him tagged in there on some plays here and there and just we haven’t had a lot of plays as of late.”

During the absence of Minnesota receiver Jordan Addison, Thielen was playing nearly every single offensive snap.

Now without a team, the 12-year veteran has the experience to be able to pick up an NFL offense quickly.
