The New York Jets will host the Miami Dolphins in Week 14 at MetLife Stadium.
Ahead of that scheduled matchup, head coach Aaron Glenn put the fish on notice.
“Looking forward to getting to work this week. We have a good quality opponent who I think is playing fairly well right now. Listen, we owe those guys. We lost one down there with those guys, so looking forward to those guys coming to our place and getting a chance to play them,” Coach Glenn said on Monday, December 1.
Miami has won three in a row and has won four of its last five.
Dolphins Got the Best of the Jets the First Time Around
In Week 4, the Jets traveled to Miami to play the Dolphins on Monday Night Football.
Both teams entered the contest with a winless record of 0-3. Miami ended up winning 27-21.
Tua Tagovailoa was efficient, finishing 17-of-25 for 177 passing yards with two passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. De’Von Achane toted the rock 20 times for 99 rushing yards and scored a touchdown on the ground.
The Jets boasted a dominant rushing attack in the contest. They finished with 197 rushing yards, with 81 of them coming from then starting quarterback Justin Fields and another 81 of them coming from tailback Breece Hall.
Fields is now on the bench and hasn’t been used in a wildcat role or in any special package since. The green and white are 3-9 on the season and have lost five one-score contests, including the first Miami matchup.
A Juicy Redemption Storyline to Keep an Eye On
America loves a good comeback story.
This game has the potential for one on the Jets’ side. Back in that Week 4 contest, wide receiver and return specialist Isaiah Williams made two costly mistakes. He fumbled a kickoff return in the second half that directly led to a Dolphins touchdown. Later in that game, he fair caught a ball at his own two-yard line, which backed up his team.
Days later, the Jets waived Williams from the roster after his errors. After a one-game sabbatical in free agency, the Jets re-signed Williams to the practice squad.
That timeout seemed to be exactly what the doctor ordered to get Williams’ head screwed on straight.
On offense, he has been targeted 10 times and has caught five receptions for 37 receiving yards. More importantly, Williams has been a key cog for the Jets’ special teams unit.
He has fielded 20 kickoff returns for 584 return yards, which leads the team. Williams has averaged 29.2 yards per return, which was highlighted by an 83-yard return that nearly went for a touchdown.
In the punt return game, Williams has been even more dangerous. He has fielded 23 punt returns for 296 yards. Williams has averaged 12.9 yards per return, the highlight being a 74-yarder for a touchdown.
The Jets lead the league in multiple categories, including kickoff return yardage (1,776), yards per kick return (29.6), and longest kickoff return touchdown (99).
Head Coach Aaron Glenn Fires off Strong Message About Williams
Coach Glenn caught a lot of heat for his handling of the Williams situation.
Initially, keeping Williams after his Miami mistakes, cutting him, and then bringing him back. However, when you look back with 20/20 hindsight, Glenn handled everything perfectly.
“I think I told you guys from the beginning, we were together in Detroit, and man, there are a number of good things that you saw from him then. I remember hoping that he wouldn’t get picked up when we released him in Detroit, thinking we’d get him right back. Cincinnati picked him up, and he was on their squad for a while,” Coach Glenn explained.
“I know the background of this player, I know how hard he works, listen I know he made mistakes early on but I truly believe in this player and it goes to show you that there is so much outside noise that has no clue on what is going on here and they can critisize things that we do but listen I know that player very well and I knew what he was going to bring to the table. I’m excited not just for now what he is doing but going forward, how he is going to help our team. It’s not just on special teams that you can see; he is a huge part of what we are doing on offense, too,” Coach Glenn added.
