‘Most extreme cold on Earth’ to grip the US and affect 235 million Americans
Weather warnings have been issued across 30 states with the US set to be blasted with some of the most ‘extreme cold on Earth’. A bone-chilling polar vortex is poised to freeze the US starting tonight (Tuesday), with The National Weather Service issuing winter weather advisories to warn against the extreme temperatures – which could feel as low as -30°F – and potential snow storms. What is a polar vortex?
A polar vortex is a large, low-pressure cold air system. It resembles a giant, spinning whirlpool of cold air high in the atmosphere. The vortex is usually found above the North Pole, and is normally held in place by strong winds which act as a barrier, keeping the more extreme cold away from the US. (Picture: Getty)
However, the reason for the weather alerts is that strong storms and high-pressure systems in the lower atmosphere have sent ripples of warmer air upwards. This has knocked the polar vortex off balance, which has sent this icy Arctic air dipping farther south, heading for the US and potentially affecting 235 million Americans. (Picture: Getty)
The resulting winter storms are expected set to stretch from Maine to Nebraska. Add to that wind chills in certain regions, especially the Midwest and Great Plains, and this could make it feel like -10 to -30 degrees Fahrenheit. The winter weather rushed in with full force last night; it has already caused crashes and closed schools in Missouri, created more than a foot of snow in Iowa, and left drivers struggling to see in New York. Now, the East Coast is preparing for a similar wave of dangerous weather. Some areas on the East Coast have already started facing the beginnings of cold weather, including the Albany area. Large stretches of the Midwest have similarly been hit by a snow-storm, including in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, and could continue to see temperatures drop into the single digits today. This winter blast and ongoing snow storms have already caused a 45-car pileup along Interstate 70 in Indiana on Saturday. Several of the cars lost control and slid across the eastbound side to the median, into the grass, and even toward oncoming traffic on the westbound side of the highway. Fortunately, there is not believed to be any serious injuries resulting from the accident. (Picture: Getty)
Climatologist Judah Cohen, a research scientist at MIT, spoke to USA Today about the weather, saying: ‘My thinking is that the cold the first week of December is the appetizer and the main course will be in mid-December.’ Cohen says that his computer modelling has forecasted ‘that the most expansive region of most likely extreme cold on Earth stretches from the Canadian Plains to the US East Coast in the third week of December.’ Unfortunately, it can be difficult to determine where snow will fall and how much for more than a few days ahead, as precipitation cannot be predicted more than three days in advance.
