Browns Sign 5-Year Veteran After Maliek Collins Injury

For Browns defensive lineman Sam Kamara, bouncing up and down between the practice squad and the 53-man roster is not exactly new. He has been in the NFL for five years now, spending his rookie season in Chicago before coming to Cleveland for the past four seasons. In that time, he has been up and down between squads more than five times, and has been waived and re-signed six.

But the Browns elevated him three times from the practice squad already this season (including this past weekend), which means that the team now either must let him walk or sign him to a contract for the rest of the season. Given his spate of institutional knowledge with the Browns and their defense, the team did not want to lose him, and it was announced that he will be signed to a contract.

As Ian Rapoport of NFL Network wrote on Twitter/X: “The #Browns are signing DL Sam Kamara to the active roster, per his agents Zac Hiller and Matt Leist of @LAASportsEnt. Kamara was elevated from the practice squad for Sunday, now signed.”

Browns Will Need Sam Kamara

Kamara did not just make a cameo for the Browns on Sunday against the 49ers–he actually played meaningful snaps. He had played 14 snaps in his one other appearance in the season, in Week 8 at New England. But he played 20 snaps this week and was credit with a tackle.

Kamara had his best season with the Browns last year, when he made 11 appearances and earned a start for the Browns in Week 18, registering six tackles.

From the Browns’ release on Kamara’s most recent practice-squad elevation: “The Cleveland Browns have elevated DT Sam Kamara from the practice squad.

“Kamara (6-0, 272) is in his third NFL season out of Stony Brook. Originally signed by the Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2021, he has appeared in 23 career games. He has appeared in 15 games with the Browns from 2022-25, including one this season. Kamara will wear No. 92.”

Maliek Collins Out for Season

The move on Kamara comes as the Browns are in flux on the defensive front following the news that Maliek Collins‘ quad injury would require surgery and force him to miss the remainder of the season. Collins had been having a stellar season, with a career-high 6.5 sacks on the year.

Said coach Kevin Stefanski: “Maliek Collins has a quad injury that will require surgery, so he will be out for the season. So very disappointed for Maliek, and he’s obviously been playing such good football, and he provides great leadership for this football team. So disappointed for him, but he will bounce back.”
