One of the biggest film franchises of all time, often hailed as a ‘masterpiece’, has arrived on Amazon Prime Video.
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Jurassic Park first hit cinema screens in 1993, transforming film forever using revolutionary technology to bring dinosaurs to life before our very eyes.
Based on Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel of the same name, Jurassic Park sees wealthy businessman John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) assemble a team of experts – Dr Ellie Satler (Laura Dern), Alan Grant (Sam Neill), and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) – to visit his new attraction where a team of genetic scientists have brought dinosaurs back to life.
But the visit is plunged into chaos when industrial sabotage leads to a shutdown of the park’s power facilities, allowing the dinosaurs to escape their enclosures.
It was an instant hit at the time of its release, quickly surpassing Spielberg’s own E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to become the highest-grossing film of all time until Titanic in 1997.
Jurassic Park won 20 awards, including three Oscars, and is often considered one of the greatest summer blockbusters ever made.
A sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, followed in 1997, set four years after the events of the first film, in which Hammond’s nephew, Peter Ludlow (Arliss Howard), takes control of InGen and intends to create a new dinosaur theme park with creatures roaming on the neighbouring island, Isla Sorna.
Hammond sends a team, led by Goldbum’s Malcolm, to the island to document the dinosaurs, with the group running into InGen along the way.
Jurassic Park III was released in 2001, in which wealthy couple Paul and Amanda Kirby (William H. Macy and Téa Leoni) enlist the help of Neill’s character from the first film, Dr Grant, to retrieve their son, who has gone missing on Isla Sorna.
The franchise has gone on to generate more than $5billion (£3.7b) in revenue, making it one of the highest-grossing of all time.
The film series alone, discounting any merchandise, has earned more than $6bn (£4.5bn) worldwide, also making it one of the highest-grossing ever released.

Speaking about Jurassic Park’s success, Spielberg reflected on the franchise in an interview with The New York Times and explained why he believes The Lost World never achieved the same success as its predecessor.
‘My sequels aren’t as good as my originals because I go onto every sequel I’ve made and I’m too confident,’ he said.
‘This movie made a ka-zillion dollars, which justifies the sequel, so I come in like it’s going to be a slam dunk, and I wind up making an inferior movie to the one before. I’m talking about The Lost World and Jurassic Park.’
Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and Jurassic Park III are streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
