A Mega Millions ticket sold at a CVS in Corona del Mar is worth more than $5.1 million, the California Lottery announced this weekend, making it one of the largest second-place winners in state history.
The ticket, sold at the store at Jasmine Avenue and Coast Highway, matched the first five numbers in Friday night’s drawing — 34, 38, 42, 44 and 69 — missing only the Mega Ball, 8.
Because no one nationwide matched all six numbers, Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot climbs to an estimated $60 million.
The $5,104,961 prize now ranks second among California’s biggest five-number Mega Millions wins, surpassing the $4.6 million ticket sold in Tarzana on Aug. 8.
California’s prize system is different from most states: instead of fixed payouts, prize amounts vary based on ticket sales and the number of winners. That’s why second-place prizes in California can sometimes reach unusually high amounts, lottery officials said.
Since 2015, several single-ticket, second-place Mega Millions wins in California have topped $3 million. These were the biggest second-place wins:

The odds of matching the first five Mega Millions numbers are 1 in 12,629,232, according to California Lottery spokesman Daniel Kelly.
The identity of the latest winner will not be known until they come forward and complete the verification and prize-claim process. Claim forms are available on the California Lottery’s website or at retail partner locations.
