Britain’s royal family has continued one tradition every Christmas for centuries. But Prince William is ready to get rid of it as soon as he becomes the monarch.

The Prince of Wales will make several changes when he becomes king, as he hopes to modernize the monarchy. This includes a few holiday things he’s not fond of. William has the full support of his wife, too, since the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) has never been a fan of the family’s gift-giving tradition.

Here’s more on the other change William plans to make regarding the royal family’s Christmas Day.

One royal holiday tradition dates back nearly 200 years

It’s common knowledge that the royal family exchanges presents on Christmas Eve.

Opening gifts the night before goes back to the family’s German ancestry. The tradition began during Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 to 1901. She and Prince Albert were insistent on doing so as a nod to their German heritage. The late Queen Elizabeth II upheld the custom since it focused on Christmas Day’s spiritual meaning. (Christians focus on the birth of Jesus Christ, rather than presents.)

Well, once Prince William becomes king, he’ll scrap the tradition. It’s been reported that the Prince of Wales is not a fan of the family gathering the night before. During this time, family members open cheap gag gifts from each other. Princess Kate is totally on board with getting rid of the tradition. She always found it odd to open presents before Christmas morning. And William has taken cues from his more relaxed Middleton in-laws on giving gifts on Christmas Day instead.

An insider told the <a href=”https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/royals/article-15360315/royals-Christmas-ritual-Prince-William-axe.html” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Daily Mail, “While William’s mind is on much bigger changes than just the trestle table, it’s well known to be one of those antiquated traditions that he’s never really taken to. You can expect that to be one of the first things to go when he eventually hosts his first Sandringham Christmas.”

Prince Harry Reveals the 1 Royal Tradition He Still Follows at Christmas While Another Family Member Wants to Get Rid of It

But that’s not the only thing William plans to scrap with how the family does things at Christmas.

For the Christmas Day lunch, family members come to the table from their rooms, which are arranged according to their status. That means that someone like Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall, who William is very close with, would be left until last since she was not assigned an HRH title at birth.

The source explained: “William adores Zara. He would hate that the practice of leaving her to the back of a queue. It’s just not William’s way of doing things at home, and he has apparently quipped in the past that he wouldn’t continue any of that stuff, though he appreciates his father does it for the nostalgia and as a way to remember the queen.”
