Nelly Furtado had the song of the summer back in 2006 when Maneater topped the UK charts – and now she’s back with ‘the best song of 2024’.

The Canadian-Portuguese singer and songwriter, 45, broke out in the early 2000s with her hit debut single I’m Like a Bird and follow-up song Turn Off the Light.

A huge rebrand in the mid-2000s, which saw her collaborate with R&B super-producer Timbaland, sent her to international stardom with a run of global hits.

Since then, she’s recorded a string of both English-language and Spanish-language albums but since 2017 Nelly she took a major step back from the spotlight.

Now, after a run of new promotional singles over the summer, the Promiscuous singer has returned with her seventh studio album in total, appropriately titled 7.

And one of the tracks on that brand new album has caught the attention of Nelly fans everywhere after being released as a last-minute promo single, with one devotee calling it ‘the song of the year’.

Honesty, which has been written in collaboration with British DJ and musician Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, is track five on the Friday release.

On X, @SeanBScHMN reacted with glee: ‘Nelly Furtado gave us a song for the gays/song of the year [with Honesty] on this new (f*****g fantastic) album!’

Concurring with Sean was @SoneSelenatorSK who sang the praises of Nelly’s new hit, saying ‘Honesty’ is so good it gives me summer vibes – what a bop’ and tagging the singer in the message.

Meanwhile, @BloodyRick said: ‘7 by Nelly Furtado is out at midnight – it’s been a long time coming, girl. Floodgate and Honesty are my favourite gems.’

After the release of Honesty, which came just as 7 itself was about to be unleashed, @HeldieHelder screamed: ‘OH MY GOSH HONESTY IS A JAM!’

On a day when the likes of Katy Perry, Future, and Jamie xx released new music, it seems that Honesty has shown itself to be the big favourite among pop fans.

Nelly was an overnight success in the early 2000s, with her debut single I’m Like a Bird hitting the UK top five and reaching the Billboard top 10 in America.

After her second album, titled Folklore, failed to match the success of her debut, titled Whoa! Nelly, she left DreamWorks Music and signed to Mosley and Interscope, owned by Timbaland.

Her third album, Loose, produced two US number ones (Promiscuous and Say It Right) and a number one in the UK (Maneater), while her association with Timbaland also give her a second number one, Give It to Me.

She also produced a major hit alongside British singer-songwriter James Morrison, titled Broken Strings, which was one of the biggest hits in the UK in 2008.

Away from music, Nelly was married to Demacio Castellon between 2008 and 2016. She has three children – one shared with former boyfriend Jasper Gahunia, and two with Odd Future rapper Hodgy Beats (now known as Jerry).
