30-foot sinkhole opens outside Nicolas Cage’s Malibu home after driveway collapses

A 30-foot sinkhole has opened up outside a Malibu home reportedly belonging to Hollywood star Nicolas Cage after its driveway suddenly collapsed.

The crater, estimated to measure around 9.1metres, appeared following heavy rain and high waves across Southern California in recent days.

No injuries have been reported, while representatives for Cage have been approached for comment.

The Oscar-winning actor is reported to have bought the property in 2024, according to The New York Times.

Local residents said they were warned on Monday that an 8ft sinkhole had begun forming outside the home.

‘At that point, the homeowners were not overly concerned,’ one resident told Los Angeles magazine. We thought it could be fixed pretty quickly.’

But the situation rapidly became more serious.

‘All hell broke loose,’ the resident said, after more of the ground gave way in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The collapse left a vast crater where much of the driveway had been, with broken asphalt, concrete and construction debris falling into the hole.

Emergency services were called after the structural failure caused a gas leak.

SoCalGas later confirmed the leak had been secured.

Traffic cones have since been placed around the enormous crater, with reports suggesting seawater can be seen surging into the hole and back out beneath the supports of the property.

The collapse came after a coastal flooding warning was issued for the area amid the effects of Tropical Storm Marie, which had previously been a hurricane.
