1. A Man On The Inside: Season 2

A Man On The Inside was one of the best new Netflix shows of 2024, with Ted Danson as Charles, a lonely, widowed pensioner coming to terms with the death of his wife. However he gets a new lease of life when he is hired by a PI to live undercover in a retirement home. The second series sees him return as the intrepid, unlikely detective – this time going undercover as a professor at a prestigious college. There may even be a love interest for Charles, played by Danson’s real-life wife Mary Steenburgen. Don’t miss this one, whatever you do.

Release date: November 20.

2. One Shot With Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is, of course, a musical colossus, but now he’s turned his attention to Netflix too, joining forces with the director of Adolescence for this hour-long special. And just as that monumental miniseries was shot in a single take, so here director Philip Barantini uses the same technique, as he follows the Shape Of You hitmaker through a series of performances across New York City. Impressive stuff.

Awards season is coming – which means, also, that some of this year’s potential Oscar contenders are making their way into cinemas and onto streaming platforms. Here’s one which is being seen as something of a dark horse for awards glory after picking up stellar reviews, and a big old 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Train Dreams, based on the novel by Denis Johnson, is set in 1917 and follows a railroad worker (Joel Edgerton) who lives a life of hermitage, until he marries and has a daughter. Then, a tragic incident changes everything.

4. The Carman Family Deaths

Barely a month goes by on Netflix without yet more true crime coming our way – and here’s another documentary series that’s set to have you gripped. This time the focus is on an incident from 2016, when mother and son Linda and Nathan Carman went on an overnight fishing trip off the coast of Rhode Island. Except Linda never returned. With the finger of suspicion pointing at Nathan, and a complex family background which also included the unsolved murder of his grandfather, the documentary takes a deep dive into the case.

5. Broadchurch: Seasons 1-3

It’s not just new shows and films which make their mark on Netflix – because one of the biggest shows of the 2010s has also just landed on there. Crime drama Broadchurch, written by former Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall, caused a sensation when it debuted in 2013, with millions tuning in to find out how it ended. David Tennant and Olivia Colman star as a detective duo investigating the murder of an 11-year-old boy in the titular seaside town, in a case which devastates the small, close-knit community. Two more series followed, which continued the story, while focusing on new, equally gripping plotlines. If you’ve not seen it before now’s your chance.

6. The Beast In Me

It’s not just films that are picking up amazing reviews all over the shop at the moment – this series, which stars Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys, has also wowed critics, with The Guardian calling it ‘top-tier television’. Danes stars as Aggie Wood, a troubled author who has retreated from public life, and who is struggling with writer’s block, following the death of her young son. However, when a new neighbour (Rhys) moves into the house next door, she’s drawn into a twisted mystery as she starts to suspect he may have murdered his first wife. Prepare the edge of the seat for this one, you’re going to need it.

Release date: Out now.
