Ted Danson’s hit Netflix show A Man on the Inside is officially returning to the streamer later this year, after the first season spent weeks in the top 10 TV ranking.

The charming eight-part sitcom follows the Cheers star as widowed pensioner Charles Nieuwendyk, who is hired by a PI to live undercover in a retirement home.

His mission? To find out who nicked a (pretty hideous, but pretty pricey) ruby necklace from a resident there.

Created by the very capable hands of The Good Place’s Mike Schur, the show was based on the 2020 Chilean documentary The Mole Agent, which was nominated for an Oscar.

Netflix has now confirmed everyone’s favourite amateur detective will be back on November 20, investigating another mystery in a new setting.

The streaming giant even dropped a series of first-look images of the returning cast of characters, which includes new cast member and New Girl star Max Greenfield as a billionaire.

The series was praised by critics and audiences alike and still holds a near-perfect 96% rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes

Netflix viewers of the first season were particularly taken with the show’s ability to blend the feel-good message with poignant and ‘heartbreaking’ themes on aging, losing those you love and finding community.

So what might fans expect from season two? Netflix is keeping cards close to its chest, but we do at least have a summary of the upcoming episodes – which teas a new love for Charles (and she could even be involved in the mystery in question).

‘Eager to take on another big undercover case, Charles Nieuwendyk (Danson) gets his chance when a mysterious blackmailer targets Wheeler College president Jack Berenger (Max Greenfield), who enlists Charles to go undercover as a professor,’ the plot synopsis reads.

So who might be making these threats? They could have something to do with billionaire Brad Vinick (Gary Cole), a Wheeler graduate, and his proposed donation to the school.

The summary continues: ‘Charles finds no shortage of possible suspects, but his attention gets diverted by free-spirited music teacher Mona (Mary Steenburgen), whose zest for life awakens feelings he thought he’d buried after the passing of his wife.

‘Meanwhile, his daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) is inspired by the changes in her father and uncovers a long-ignored passion, while PI Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) embarks on her own journey of growth as she reconnects with an important figure from her past,’ the synopsis continues.’

A Man on the Inside season 2 drops on Netflix on November 20.
