A-Lister Interrupted on Live TV by Parent-Teacher Conference

Derek Jeter

Even the most famous parents can get caught off guard. That’s exactly what happened to a sports legend when he was interrupted mid-broadcast by a phone call reminding him that he had missed a school meeting for his kids.

That legendary athlete? It was none other than former New York Yankees baseball player Derek Jeter, who nearly answered his phone live on air when he realized that he was missing a parent-teacher conference.

One would think that those working live on air would remember to turn off their phone, but apparently, retired baseball player Derek Jeter forgot. While serving as Fox’s MLB analyst on the pregame show for the Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers game on Oct. 7, which had been delayed three hours due to rain, Jeter was interrupted mid-broadcast when his phone buzzed.

In the clip shared by MLB on Fox’s Instagram page, a phone is heard ringing near Jeter, who tells his colleagues, former Red Sox player David Ortiz and commentator Kevin Burkhardt, “Sorry. It’s a rain delay. I had a parent-teacher conference that I’m going to miss. So, sorry guys.”

However, Ortiz jokingly tells Jeter to “Take it, take it!” as it pertains to his children. “I might,” Jeter replied.

“Derek has a parent-teacher conference to go to, so we’re going to take a break. Well I mean, we weren’t supposed to be on the air. You’re right. This is a surprise to all of us,” Burkhardt also jokes.

After posting the hilarious moment on Instagram, fans flooded the comments, praising Jeter’s colleagues for having his back and joking that commentating a game delayed three hours is far less important than any missed call from school.

“The best part was all the other supporting men on that stage actually meaning when they say “go man, take it,” a fan wrote.

“A+ parenting. A+ teammates encouraging him to take it,” another comment read.

Jeter is a proud parent of four children, whom he shares with his wife, Hannah Davis Jeter. According to People, the famous parents welcomed their first child, a girl named Bella Raine Jeter, in August 2017. The couple’s second daughter, Story Grey Jeter, was born in January 2019, while their third daughter, River Rose Jeter, was born in December 2021. Two years later, Hannah would give birth to their fourth child, a boy named Kaius Green Jeter, in May 2023.

When asked by E! News (via NBC New York) how the couple makes time for each other with their full house, Hannah shared, “We started having kids right after we got married. So [we] just continue to make time for each other, take trips. There’s a lot going on, day-to-day, in our household — a lot of noise, a lot of kids, and that can be really overwhelming. So it’s nice once in a while, date night — just the simple things.”
