“Modern Family” star Julie Bowen never expected to reprise her role as Virginia Venit in “Happy Gilmore 2“. Despite starring opposite Adam Sandler in the original 1996 comedy, Bowen, now 55, had assumed she would be replaced by someone younger.
âI thought, âWell, I wonât be in it.â And that was OK,â she told The Hollywood Reporter. âItâs been 30 years, heâs got a hottie. Heâs got some little bitty on the side, like a cart girl.â
She even heard the casting rumor from her teen: âMy now 18-year-old said, âMom, I hear theyâre doing a sequel and heâs with Sydney Sweeney as a cart girl,ââ Bowen shared. âI went, âIâm hurt, and I so respect that move.ââ
So when the call came confirming sheâd be in the sequel, Bowen was stunned. âAre you sure? Come on,â she recalled saying.
Adam Sandler Shut Down Her Doubts With One Sweet Sentence
In a recent appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Bowen opened up further about her return to the “Happy Gilmore” universe.
âI didn’t think they’d bring me back at all,â she said. âI mean, who am I supposed to be? He’s got to have a younger woman in this one, Happy Gilmore 2.â
She downplayed her role again, saying sheâs “in it for, like, a heartbeat.” But Sandler wasnât having it. âStop saying that! You’re the heart of the movie!â he told her.
Julie Bowen Recalls Her First Audition for the Original Film
In the same podcast, Bowen also looked back on her original audition for “Happy Gilmore”, remembering how nervous she felt walking into a room full of “super sexy girls.”
âThey were all sexy and they had it together,â she said. âI was wearing jeans, maybe. I donât know, it was something very normal. The girl that had gone in before me was real, real bombshelly.â
However, what she thought was a disadvantage turned out to be the edge she needed. âI read, and they were visibly relieved,â she recalled. “Theyâre like, âYeah, some of these girls are just so aggressively sexy.ââ
“Happy Gilmore 2” will be available to stream on Netflix starting July 25, bringing fans back into the world of golf, laughs, and one of Adam Sandler’s most iconic characters.
For Julie Bowen, itâs not just a return to the role of Virginia Venitâitâs a reminder that time, friendship, and heart always win.
Adam Sandler’s History of Being a Supportive, Wholesome Friend
Julie Bowen isn’t the only friend Adam Sandler has supported so lovingly.
Sandler has also shown quiet, consistent support to Jennifer Aniston, his longtime co-star and close friend. In a 2023 interview with the Wall Street Journal, Aniston revealed that Sandler and his wife, Jackie, send her flowers every Motherâs Day. This thoughtful gesture began after Sandler learned of Anistonâs struggle with infertility.
In 2022, she opened up to Allure about going through IVF and the challenges she faced trying to conceive. âI was trying to get pregnant. It was a challenging road for me,â she said. âI wouldâve given anything if someone had said to me, âFreeze your eggs.ââ
Despite the heartbreak, Sandler and his wife have ensured that Aniston feels loved and remembered during what can be an emotionally challenging time.
