Supportive husband that he is, Adam Sandler turned up to support his wife Jackie at the premiere of her new film Office Romance this week.
Unfortunately for Jackie, the internet quickly became more interested in what he was wearing than the actual movie itself.
While Jennifer Lopez led the cast on the red carpet, Sandler showed up in the kind of casualwear we’ve all become accustomed to him wearing – even on a red carpet.
The Waterboy and Uncut Gems actor wore an oversized orange New York Knicks hoodie, loose blue sweatpants and trainers, all of which looked chosen entirely on the basis that they were near the bed when he got out of it that morning.
Jackie, meanwhile, wore a glittery black mini dress with black tights and heels while posing for photos alongside her husband.
The reaction online was pretty fierce because people apparently still expect Adam Sandler to be all dressed up at such events, despite the fact that the comedy superstar is known for his extremely relaxed persona and appearance.
One Reddit user wrote: ‘I feel like it’s one thing when he’s promoting or doing his own projects but for his wife’s work you think he could throw on some khakis and a golf shirt at least lol.’
Another person said: ‘He always looks like he just turned thirteen and discovered his dad’s credit card.’
A third added that it ‘must be so cool to be a man and be allowed to look like c***.’
Not everybody was horrified though. Some people pointed out that this is basically how Sandler has dressed for most of his adult life – so he shouldn’t be expected to be any different on this occasion.
One fan joked: ‘I mean, for Sandler that’s pretty much formal wear.’ Another wrote: ‘Its his shtick why are we surprised lol.’
The actor has spoken before about how comfortable Jackie is with his famously scruffy wardrobe choices.
In an interview with Complex, he explained that other people used to question why he never dressed smarter while standing next to his glamorous wife.
‘My wife always was nice to me about my clothes,’ he said. ‘My wife would say, “He’s comfortable like that. Let him do that. Leave him alone.”’
The couple first met while filming the 1999 comedy Big Daddy. Jackie had a small role in the film as a waitress before the pair later married in 2003.
Their wedding took place at Dick Clark’s oceanfront estate in Malibu with a guest list that reportedly included Jennifer Aniston, Jack Nicholson, Rob Schneider and Sharon Osbourne. Which is quite an impressive collection of names for one seating plan.
Adam later marked 22 years since they first met with an Instagram tribute that said: ‘22 years ago today we locked eyes and fell deep. Look forward to the next 22, young lady. Love you my forever girl.’
The pair now share two daughters, Sadie, 20, and Sunny, 17. Both have already appeared in several Netflix projects alongside their parents including Happy Gilmore 2, Leo and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.
Sadie also stars in the comedy Roommates, which was produced through Adam’s company Happy Madison.
So even if their dad refuses to wear proper trousers at premieres, the family business seems to be doing pretty well regardless.
