
When it comes to well-known weathercasters, Al Roker’s name is typically one of the first that comes to mind. He’s been in the business for decades and has become a staple on “The Today Show.” Recently, he opened up about the origin of his famous catchphrase.Â
Fans of “The Today Show” know that Al Roker’s catchphrase is, “Here’s what’s happening in your neck of the woods.” PEOPLE interviewed the celebrated journalist and weathercaster. In the discussion, he revealed that the phrase holds personal meaning for him.Â
According to Al, “My grandfather used to say that, yeah. So that was kind of an homage to him.” Regarding his reason for saying it, Al revealed, “I’ve got to say the same thing so that the local stations know when to cut away.”
Al Roker Recently Received a Lifetime Achievement Award
Al Roker has been with “The Today Show” since 1996, but has been working in television since the 1970s. According to Parade, the 2025 News & Documentary Emmy Awards honored him with the Lifetime Achievement award.
Naturally, Al celebrated the achievement live with his “Today Show” family. He said on the June 26th broadcast, “I could not do any of this, I would not have achieved any of this without all of you and this crew and the folks who are in the control room [and] our staff over across the street.”
Al Roker continued, “Nobody does this by themselves. I donât care who you are. You just canât.” During the show, Dylan Dreyer told Al, “I love working with you every single day. The way you looked up to Willard Scott is the way I look up to you, and I have learned so much just by having the privilege to work next to you.”Â
His other co-hosts, Carson Daly and Craig Melvin, also commented on his long career and assured the viewers that Al isn’t “going anywhere” despite receiving the prestigious award.Â
Another Award For Al
Receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award is a significant honor for anyone, regardless of their field. However, Al Roker has been winning Emmy Awards since the early 1990s. He received his first nomination in 1997 for hosting the game show “Remember This?”
From there, he won his first one the following year for his involvement with the “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.” Notably, Al Roker can still be seen anchoring the parade. According to IMDb, he has eight Emmy wins, in addition to his Lifetime Achievement award.Â
