Alison Hammond has admitted she initially felt like a ‘failure’ after splitting from the father of her son.

The This Morning presenter, 48, first hit screens on the 2002 season of Big Brother, going on to join ITV’s flagship breakfast programme, before signing up to co-host The Great British Bake Off last year.

Over the years she’s also appeared on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity MasterChef.

But it was on the latest episode of This Morning that she admitted a particular time in her personal life left her feeling unsuccessful.

On Friday’s episode, Alison and co-host Dermot O’Leary were speaking to Paloma Faith about her new album The Glorification of Sadness, which she said was based on her break-up with Leyman Lahcine, the father of her two children.

‘It feels very heavy that I broke up with my children’s dad. I felt stages of grief and even now two years on I feel this sense of guilt I failed my children, society and what’s expected,’ she shared.

‘The album goes through the stages of grief It is my biggest failure and my only regret despite being someone who has never regretted anything.’

However soon after Alison gave her a pep talk, saying that whilst she had once felt the same, it was incorrect.

‘That doesn’t make you a failure- you are a single mum and a pop star who is smashing life. That is your life and journey and story.’

She continued: ‘I felt that failure with my son’s dad when we broke up but he moved on and has three other kids now and they are part of our life.’

She was last publicly in a relationship with gardener Ben Hawkins, but they are thought to have split early last year.

The former couple dated for around two years but kept their relationship private with the pair only pictured in public together once.

Alison previously spoke about her approach to relationships on Gyles Brandreth’s podcast Rosebud, admitting she ‘struggles’ because she loves her own company.

‘I think that’s why I struggle in relationships because I don’t want somebody around me all the time. I love being on my own. I’m OK with it. I’ve never felt lonely.’

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
