Amanda Seyfried already has her dream casting wishlist ready for a potential âMamma Mia 3â and sheâs hoping Sydney Sweeney and Sabrina Carpenter will join her on the island.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress said sheâd love to welcome both stars into the franchise if the third film moves forward. Seyfried, who played Sophie in the first two movies, added that sheâs âpretty sureâ the sequel is happening, even though Universal hasnât officially confirmed it yet.
Seyfried shared that she sees the next chapter returning to Sophie in the present day, now fully settled into motherhood. She teased new family dynamics and said Carpenter could play Sophieâs cousin instead of her daughter. As for Sweeney, Seyfried said sheâd love to bring her âThe Housemaidâ co-star into the mix, adding, âSydney Sweeney could show up. A bunch of girls want to be part of it, and Iâm all for it.â
Sweeney has previously expressed interest in joining the film, telling Variety in 2023 that she loves âMamma Miaâ and would enjoy filming something in Greece.
Why Seyfried Thinks the Cast Could Expand
While a third film has been long rumored, Seyfried noted that producer Judy Craymer does have a script, strengthening the possibility of another movie. She mentioned that she loves playing Sophie as a mother and wants to explore what that version of the character looks like now.
She also floated the idea of building out Sophieâs larger family, making space for new female characters played by Carpenter, Sweeney and others interested in joining the world of ABBA music and Greek sunshine.
Along with potential newcomers, Seyfried thinks most of the original ensemble would return. She said she expects the three possible dads â Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd â to join the story again. She also mentioned Christine Baranski and Julie Walters, saying fans could likely expect more musical moments from them if the film moves forward.
Earlier reports also noted Seyfriedâs interest in bringing back Meryl Streep, who played Donna. Seyfried previously said she hoped writers find a way for Streep to return, despite Donnaâs death in the second film.
Inside Seyfried and Sweeneyâs Onscreen Dynamic
Seyfried and Sweeney star together in the upcoming thriller âThe Housemaid,â which arrives in theaters in December. In a recent exclusive clip shared by Entertainment Weekly, Sweeneyâs character Millie discovers that Seyfriedâs character Nina may be lying about her pregnancy, setting up the filmâs tense psychological twists.
Sweeney told EW the moment leaves Millie questioning everything, saying the reveal makes her wonder, âHave you been lying to me this entire time?â
Their onscreen chemistry is part of why fans are already imagining the pair reuniting again â this time in a brighter, musical setting.
As for âMamma Mia 3,â Seyfried summed up her excitement simply: âThereâs a bunch of girls that really want to be part of it, and Iâm all for it.â
