Viewers are rushing to binge an ‘excellent’ crime drama that offers a fresh perspective on a comic book classic.

Created by Bruno Heller, Gotham follows James ‘Jim’ Gordon’s early days at the Gotham City Police Department following the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television, the show also features the origin story of Batman’s infamous rogues’ gallery.

Featuring an ensemble cast with Ben McKenzie as Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock and David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, the series has received high praise from fans.

Consisting of five seasons, a prequel series called Pennyworth, starring Jack Bannon as a younger version of Alfred Pennyworth, has also since aired.

But with Gotham being available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, fans are raving about its unique backstory to the DC Comics.

Writing on IMDb, where it currently has a 7.8 rating, hgdybecker described it as a ‘different take on the Batman universe – but a very good one’.

They wrote: ‘There is an awful lot to like here. First of all, the characters are interesting: interesting enough to make you forget all about Batman! You root for Gordon, you’re annoyed at Bullock, Fish gives you the creeps and Penguin… let’s just say he’s moved up in my favorite villains list (and he was near the bottom, let me tell you!).

‘The acting is great (again I must mention Penguin) and while some have said it’s over the top… maybe it is, but it’s never distracting and fits within the universe that we’re presented with.’

Alex_grant-41857 added: ‘Gotham is a unique and wonderful insight into the famous city before the birth of DC’s most beloved hero.

‘The show mixes comic book content with their own twists. On top of that, they have one of the most talented casts on TV.’

Fellow IMDb user Cherold was also a fan of the show, but highlighted some areas where it could improve.

They said: ‘The premise is solid. The characters are interesting. The actors are generally excellent. The atmosphere is wonderfully seedy. The overall story arc of corruption is quite good.

‘But from episode to episode, the quality varies widely. Much of the problem is the crime-of-the-week format.’

Jpelletero similarly echoed these concerns, writing: ‘I’ve been binge watching this show on Netflix right now. The storyline is okay, but each season feels painfully long and painfully slow.

‘I think a 16-18 episodes per season could’ve told the entire story arc they wanted to show, removing all the painfully slow story progressions from 4-6 episodes.’

This comes after Amazon Prime quietly dropped all episodes of a ‘brutal’ drama starring a Game of Thrones star.

Released in 2020 on Sky One, Two Weeks to Live stars Maisie Williams, best known for playing Arya Stark in Game of Thrones from 2011 until 2019.

In the six-part series, she plays ‘strange young misfit’ Kim, who was just a small child when her father died in mysterious circumstances.

Soon after her mu,m Kim – played by Fleabag’s Sian Clifford – whisked her away to a remote rural life of seclusion and bizarre survival techniques.

After years cut off from the world, Kim decides to set back out again and carry out a secret mission to honour her father’s memory.

But after meeting the socially awkward Nicky (Mawaan Rizwan) in a pub, the pair then face ‘a chaotic series of events that puts their lives in danger’ as they go on the run from murderous gangsters and the police with a massive bag of stolen cash.
