‘And Just Like That Star’ Jokes That He Killed the Show With 1 Scene

Sarah Jessica Parker

A star from “And Just Like That” is taking blame for the sudden cancellation of the HBO Max series ahead of the Season 3 finale.

In a post shared to Instagram on August 4, cast member Jonathan Cake jokingly blamed himself for the show’s demise after filming a steamy scene with Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw. Cake plays Duncan Reeves, a bestselling author and new neighbor of the iconic “Sex and the City” character, on the spinoff series.

“Wait, did i JUST KILL @justlikethatmax?” Cake, 57, captioned a photo of the bedroom scene. “Duncan finally has one night of passion with Carrie Bradshaw and the shows over…FOREVER??”

“Was it, judging by this picture, his surprisingly small head?” the actor added. “Or something else a little underwhelming? Ah Duncan Donuts, I guess America won’t run on Duncan, but it was exquisite pleasure while it lasted. “

Jonathan Cake Joined ‘AJLT’ For 1 Season & Fans Want to See More of Him

Cake’s character became a surprise love interest for Carrie after she ended her tumultuous on-and-off relationship with Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) during the third season of “And Just Like That.” The two writers bonded over critiques of each other’s manuscripts, but with just two episodes of the series left, their romance will apparently be cut short.

Fans reacted on Instagram to petition for more of the Duncan-Carrie romance.

“Wanted to see more Duncan!! Such a wonderful character, wonderful character, wonderful character. His and Carrie’s story gave the show an injection of nostalgia of what SATC used to be,” one fan wrote.

“You were quite literally my hope for the future of this show 🙌 and then they end it 😩💔,” another fan wrote. “Such a disappointment not to see the storyline of that romance unfold. It had the perfect potential to be Carries perfect romantic end game.”

“We need a movie about your life with Carrie in London 😍,” another commenter suggested.

“Take it to @netflix,” a fourth fan wrote of the HBO Max series.

Sarah Jessica Parker Knew AJLT Was Ending

While fans were blindsided by the late-season cancellation news, Parker and showrunner Michael Patrick King knew all along that AJLT would end this year.

In a statement posted on Instagram on August 1, 2025, King shared, “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That... season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop. Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12.”

King added that he and Parker waited until the season was almost finished airing before making the announcement because they “didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season.”

In his post, Cake also expressed his gratitude to King and Parker for the opportunity to play Carrie’s latest love. “@cynthiaenixon @iamkristindavis @melfijohnm my once and future King, Michael Patrick-  and the one and only ever SJP, you gave the world SUCH joy for nearly thirty years,” the English actor wrote. “I don’t think there’s a higher calling for people in our business. You knocked it out of the park and it’s still traveling, traveling, traveling. Thank you for having me on your team for a hot- a very hot- minute. You’re all brilliant.”
