Anne Hathaway Reflects on ‘The Princess Diaries’ & How It ‘Changed’ Her Life

Anne Hathaway smiles at The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement premiere

Anne Hathaway is a brilliant actress with many memorable roles, including her performances in “Les Misérables” and “Becoming Jane.” However, her breakout role was in 2001 as Mia Thermopolis in the film “The Princess Diaries.” She was 18 when she first played the part.

The second and currently last film, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” was released in 2004, and fans have been eager for a third installment. Hathaway recently reflected on her role as Mia and discussed how important it was to her.

Of her role in the film, Hathaway told People in an interview published on April 21 that it “changed” her life. She also reflected on the makeover scene opposite Julie Andrews and what it meant to her. “I’m standing next to Julie Andrews, which is just insane… I just remember everything about this, but looking at it, I’m seeing so much more than I was able to take in at the time,” Hathaway said while watching a clip.

Hathaway is a seasoned pro now, having starred in many films and conducted multiple interviews and press tours. The press tour for “The Princess Diaries” was her first, and she reflected on how she handled herself at the time and the questions she was asked. “When this film came out, the question I got asked was, ‘Every little girl wants to be a princess.’ I felt so terrible, I was little, it was my first press tour, and I just went, ‘No, they don’t,’” she said. “I do think everybody hopes that somebody is going to wave a magic wand and suddenly say, ‘You’re important.’”

The actress also spoke about her regret over the film, citing the decision to give Mia curly hair. “People thought we were saying that curly hair is unattractive, which was a terrible, completely unintended side effect,” she said. “It was just a matter of it was going to be easier and less time in the makeup trailer for us to just go with my natural hair for the post makeover stuff. So it was just a decision that was made for practical reasons that wound up having unintended consequences. But, other than that pretty flawless experience.”

Hathaway’s role as Mia meant so much to her, even if she can reflect on things that could have been handled or explained better. However, she is excited about the third film, which will be directed by Adele Lim. She teased the film on Instagram in October 2024, much to the delight of her fans.

Reactions include, “We now have multiple generations ready for this,” “Any update on the 3rd patiently waiting loved the 1st two movies,” and “I can not wait to see it. Waiting patiently.” Fans have continued to head back to the post to ask for updates.

The first two films were directed by Garry Marshall, who died in 2016. Hathaway was close to him, and in her interview with People, she spoke about her loss. “I miss Garry Marshall so much,” she said.
