Macy Gray’s abrupt departure from The Masked Singer UK is not the legendary singer’s only eyebrow-raising turn on the TV show.
Four years before she stormed off the stage after being unmasked as Toad in the Hole, the 57-year-old ‘refused’ to exit the Australian version of the singing competition series.
According to The Masked Singer Australia judge Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, Macy kicked up a bit of a fuss when it was her time to leave resulting in an awkward stand-off with producers.
‘Macy Gray had such passion for The Masked Singer that when she was told that she had to leave the show, which you saw last night, she refused to leave the show,’ the comedian previously told 2Day FM’s Morning Crew.
‘She said, “No, I’m continuing in the show,” and there had to be a discussion which went for quite a while as to, “No, you have to leave.” She said, “No, I’m not leaving.”
‘The thing is, we can’t do the end of the show unless the head comes off.’

The radio show’s co-host Ed Kavalee added: ‘So, she still had the head on, and they’re saying, “Hey, Macy-slash-Atlantis, we need you to take the head off so you can go.”
‘[And] she’s responding, “No I’m keeping the head on”?’
After a lot of convincing, Hughesy said Macy eventually agreed to leave The Masked Singer Australia.
It was a very different story on The Masked Singer UK last night; when Macy was revealed as the latest person to be unmasked, she stormed off the stage and down the tunnel.

The judges and presenter Joel Dommett were left bewildered, wondering if she would actually return to them for one final song.
Thankfully, she did, but it certainly made for awkward viewing, as Macy gave very short answers when quizzed on her clues, such as having a song in the Shrek movie and being part of a Calvin Klein jeans campaign.
When asked whether she’d ‘had fun on the show’, Macy simply replied with: ‘Yeah.’
Joel himself shared a clip of the moment on Instagram with the caption, ‘Lol’.
In the comments, his followers couldn’t help but joke about how ‘uncomfortable’ the scenes were.

Reacting to her big reveal, fans of the show took to X, obsessed with how Macy appeared ‘fuming’ that she had been eliminated.
Obsessed with Macy Gray being fuming about getting voted off… it’s about time we had a bit of drama on this show’, wrote BRATTYBARBl.
User elliot_gonzalez also joked: ‘Macy Gray is FEWMIN’.
As well as the Australian and UK versions of The Masked Singer, Macy also appeared as the wild card contestant Sea Queen in the US show.
Grammy-winning R&B star Macy is best known for her hit single I Try released in 1999 and has released a total of 10 studio albums.
Metro previously reached out to Channel 10 and Macy Gray’s representatives for comment.
