When it comes to England football anthems, the obvious one that comes to mind is Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home).

But another double act, aside from Baddiel and Skinner, entered their tune into the pantheon of footie chants.

DJ, spin Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly’s We’re On The Ball.

The track debuted in 2002 as the official England song for the World Cup, where the team succumbed in the quarter-finals, and was then re-released in 2010, where we feared far worse and fell away at the knockout stage.

But Ant and Dec have now put forth a barter to the England football team, writing in an Instagram caption to their music video for We’re On The Ball: ‘Bring it home… and we’ll remake this video?’

The video is worth a rewatch or even a first watch if it’s never crossed your transom. In it, Ant dresses up as Swedish player-turned-manager Sven-Göran Eriksson.

The lads debate going to the World Cup, but decide it’s too expensive (which is even more relatable this time aroundthanks America!).

So they hatch an ingenious plan: to nick the clothes of Eriksson and his assistant manager Tord Grip in the hopes of sneaking in as them.

But then they’re forced to take players through set pieces and gameplay, which goes about as well as you might expect.

The pair call out the passes between the then England team: ‘It’s Neville to Cambell, Cambell to Rio, Rio to Scholesy, Scholesy Gerrard. Gerrard to Beckham, Beckham to Heskey. Heskey to Owen to Nodd, 5-1.’ Mouthful.

The possibility that the song might be treated to a reprise was met with a warm reception from fans in the comments, with the suggestion that the lyrics could be updated for the current England squad.

Many of Ant and Dec’s followers said they listen to the track ‘every England competition’, with Luce writing: ‘Best World Cup song of all time.’ Olivia Rawley agreed, writing: ‘I think you should remake it anyway.’

England are hoping to put an end to the 60 years of hurt this week, with the semi-final clash on Wednesday against historic rivals Argentina.

The eyes of the footballing world will be on Atlanta as Lionel Messi and co attempt to pip England to a spot in the final against Spain, in what is sure to be a fiery face-off between two countries with a deep history on and off the field.
