Beloved Sally Kirkland Called This Iconic Musician the ‘Love of My Life’ and the ‘Reason I’m Single’

Golden Globe-winning actress Sally Kirkland has died at 83, TMZ confirmed on November 11. Her representative, Michael Greene, said she passed away at 1:50 a.m. PST in Palm Springs, where she had recently entered hospice care. Greene confirmed Kirkland had been living with dementia for the past year and was recovering from a recent fall that injured her ribs and foot.

Kirkland spoke openly about her life and loves—including a legendary musician she once called “the love of my life.”

Sally Kirkland’s Hollywood Rise and Love Story With Bob Dylan

In a 2023 interview with DailyMail.com, Kirkland shared how her affection for Bob Dylan helped shape her life and career. “I fell in love with him the second I saw him perform on stage,” she said. “I was 22 at the time, working as a waitress at Café Figaro in New York.”

She explained that watching the musician perform in Greenwich Village inspired her to follow her dreams. “I was obsessed,” she admitted. “He is the reason I am single and is definitely the love of my life.”

At the time, he was already in a relationship, but Kirkland said she couldn’t shake her feelings. When he later moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s, she decided to follow. “I said to myself, ‘I am not going to stop until I am with him.’ So, I moved too,” she recalled.

Kirkland and Dylan Shared a Connection That Spanned Decades

Kirkland’s move to Los Angeles marked the start of her acting success. Within a few years, she appeared in more than 20 film and television roles. Still, she maintained her emotional and spiritual connection to Dylan.

“We used to talk about spirituality, about life after life,” she said.

They grew close after both went through separations in their personal lives. “’I didn’t get romantic with Bob until I was in my 30’s. When we started dating, I finally got to tell him what I had been waiting to say since I was 22—that I loved him,” Kirkland said. She added that he was “charmed” by her honesty.

Over the next 20 years, Kirkland and Dylan were involved in an on-again, off-again relationship.

‘We got together in the late 70’s, had another affair in the mid 80’s and then another one in the 90’s.

But Kirkland said their bond never faded. “I believe I’ve had five lifetimes with him,” she said. “I told him that once, and he agreed with me.”
