A beloved actress primarily known for her role in television comedy shows has passed away at 89.
Scottish star Claire Nielson was born on April 8, 1937. According to The Sun, she passed away on April 29. No cause of death has yet been publicly disclosed.
Nielson was arguably best known for her appearance in the globally renowned hit British sitcom “Fawlty Towers,” which was originally broadcast on BBC Two for two series and 12 episodes in 1975 and 1979, respectively.
Specifically, she played Mrs Hamilton in the iconic “Waldorf Salad” episode in the second series of the show. In said episode, which first aired on March 5, 1979, a furious Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) ends up throwing all of his guests out of the eponymous establishment.
Basil’s anger develops from the moment Nielson’s Mrs Hamilton checks into the Fawlty Towers hotel accompanied by her American spouse, played by Canadian actor Bruce Boa. The couple demand a meal, which Basil decides to make himself, pretending a chef is present, despite the chef having left. “Waldorf Salad’s” humor derives from the cultural differences between American and British people, which made the episode particularly popular in the United States.
Nielson did, however, enjoy a lengthy career beyond her most famous on-screen credit.
