Peter Alexander is stepping into a new role following his emotional departure from NBC News. According to a report in TV Insider, on March 30, MS NOW President Rebecca Kutler confirmed that Alexander will join the network as the anchor of the 11 a.m. hour, taking over the slot previously held by Ana Cabrera, who announced her exit last week.
In addition to anchoring, he will serve as a breaking news anchor and chief national reporter.
New Role Expands Across News, Sports, and Lifestyle Coverage
In a memo to staff, Kutler detailed Alexanderâs expanded role, pointing to both his experience and the range he brings to the newsroom. As per the detailed statement published by The Hollywood Reporter:
âFor more than two decades, Peter has built a reputation for his professionalism, intrepid reporting, and sharp questioning of presidents of both parties,â Kutler wrote.
âHe is one of the most respected and beloved journalists in the Washington press corps, and we are honored to have him join our newsroom.â
She noted that Alexander will also contribute to sports and lifestyle programming across the VERSANT portfolio, underscoring his versatility beyond political coverage.
âWhether behind the anchor desk or reporting from the field, Peter is also the rare journalist who can straddle lifestyle, politics, and breaking news with ease,â Kutler continued.
âAs co-anchor of Saturday Today, Peter has demonstrated this unique versatility. He brought compassion and humanity to the weekends, building a connection with viewers, all while leading the networkâs White House coverage.â
Exit From NBC Marks End of 22-Year Run
Alexanderâs new role follows his departure from NBC News after more than two decades with the network.
He announced the news during the March 28 episode of “Saturday Today,” where he had served as co-anchor since 2018. Over the years, Alexander also served as chief White House correspondent, a role he took on in 2021.
The longtime co-host of “Saturday TODAY” announced his departure on air on March 28, explaining that he plans to step away to focus on his family and consider new opportunities. Alexander, 49, spoke with gratitude as he reflected on his years at NBC News and the personal reasons behind his decision.
“Thank you for your trust and your confidence. And most of all, thank you to NBC News for what have undoubtedly been the most exciting years of my life,” he said.
He also opened up about the impact his demanding schedule has had on his time at home.
“Iâve been away from home more than 80 nights in the last seven months. More than 200 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years,” he said.
“So, in this limited window before my daughters lose interest in hanging out with me…Iâm eager to carve out a better balance between my personal and professional lives.”
His exit came amid growing speculation that he would be moving to MS NOW, which rebranded from MSNBC in November 2025, as reported by Deadline.
