Actor Ben Affleck confessed to a friendly competition with his daughter and revealed his parenting style in a new interview.
Affleck made the comments on the TODAY show on April 22, 2025.
He has three kids with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner and one of them, the eldest, Violet, wouldn’t approve of his Spanish, Affleck revealed.
Affleck appeared on the show with Jon Bernthal to promote their new movie, âThe Accountant 2.â
He also opened up about a lesson he taught his son and whether his kids have jobs.
Ben Affleck Says He Denied His Son Samuel a Pair of Expensive Shoes
Affleck opened up about a viral moment in which his son Samuel wanted an expensive pair of shoes, but he said no.
âHe goes, âWe have the money.â I was like, âI have the money. Youâre broke!ââ Affleck said on TODAY.
âListen, you love your kids â you want to give them everything and do anything for them,â Affleck said, but he added that not setting proper boundaries does a “disservice” to kids.
Affleck revealed that his daughter Violet is working to get a college internship and his middle child Fin has âa kind of classic, you know, teenager working in a shop job.â
âAnd my son, whoâs 13, heâs reckoning with that reality right now, as heâs looking at no shoes in his closet,â Affleck joked about Samuel. âHe got shoes, just not like crazy, expensive fancy shoes. I’m like, âWell, if you want that, you can work 1,000 hours at minimum wage â and if you work 1,000 hours, you might not want to spend it on a pair of shoes.”

He also revealed that both he and Violet speak Spanish.
âMy daughter is a student of Spanish, and often, like, competes with me. She will tell me that hers is better than mine,â Affleck said on the show. âAnd Iâm glad that I get the chance to be on national television and just claim victory!â
According to Page Six, Affleck said Violet would be âappalledâ to see his television appearance.
“Sheâll be appalled, by the way,” he joked, according to Page Six.
âBut yes, I can speak a little bit of Spanish, and itâs a nice thing. I learned it when I was younger,” he said on the show, according to Page Six.
