Mel Rodriguez is embracing transformation â inside and out. The 52-year-old actor, best known for his roles in “Better Call Saul,” “The Last Man on Earth,” and “Getting On,” stunned fans by revealing his incredible weight loss on Instagram. On Monday, October 27, Rodriguez posted a striking before-and-after photo highlighting his progress.
âSometimes itâs 2 steps forward and one step back, but Iâm proud of myself for staying committed. #weightloss #weightlossjourney #growth,â he wrote in the caption.
In the first photo, Rodriguez beams as he guides a cow, symbolizing his former self. The next shows the actorâs lean, muscular frame in shorts and a tank top, followed by a confident, shirtless shot in which he flexes his bicep, proudly celebrating how far heâs come.
Co-Stars Cheer Him On for His Fitness Journey
The post quickly drew support from friends and fans, including his “The Residence” costar Uzo Aduba.
“Get it MEL!!!! You look happy and I am so happiest for that. Way to do it, brother. â¤ï¸,” Aduba, 44, commented.
Rodriguezâs transformation follows years of fluctuating weight. In a past interview with People, the actor opened up about his long battle with emotional eating and body image.
âI think Iâve put on and taken off about 150 lbs. maybe five times,â he said. âIt really is tough for me to understand that itâs a lifestyle.â
Finding Balance & Acceptance After Years of Struggle
The actor explained that he often regained weight after reaching his goals, making it hard to maintain healthy habits. âSo Iâll hit a goal weight and then think I can start eating stuff again. And Iâm an emotional eater. Itâs comforting. So Iâve just been trying to really watch what I eat,â he shared.
Rodriguez began focusing on his health during the COVID-19 pandemic, committing to consistent movement and better eating habits. He says his biggest goal now is finding inner peace and balance.
âThe biggest thing for me today is just self-acceptance and finding that weight where Iâm happy with how I feel,â he said.
Rodriguez Advocates for Size-Inclusive Representation
Beyond his personal health journey, Rodriguez continues to champion body diversity in Hollywood.
He told People that larger actors have often been stigmatized or reduced to âa jokeâ on screen. Working with Shonda Rhimes on the Netflix series “The Residence,” he said, was a refreshing experience.
âWhat I love about Shonda is that she does that kind of casting. She casts real people,â Rodriguez shared. âItâs just such a breath of fresh air and I feel like people can relate to it even more. Itâs just something you donât typically see when larger people are kind of desired by others.â
He added, âMore people want to see themselves and they want to see better representations of themselves. Not everybody looks like the guy on the cover of GQ or Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Thatâs just not real.â
