Actor and comedian Bill Murray is one of the most beloved figures in Hollywood â and in showbusiness in general, quite frankly.
Academy Award-nominated Murray, 75, has appeared in some of the most iconic movies in cinema history. From 1984’s “Ghostbusters“, 1988’s “Scrooged,” and 1993’s “Groundhog Day,” to 2003’s “Lost in Translation,” 2009’s “Zombieland,” and 2012’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” his filmography (per IMDb) is among the most impressive out there.
Of course, like everyone else, Murray has a life away from his work, and a family and children to go with it. Let’s go through five fast facts about Bill Murray’s family and kids.
Murray Has Six Children
Per People, Bill Murray is the proud father of six children â all of whom are sons.
He shares his two oldest sons with his first wife, Margaret Kelly, to whom he was married from 1981 until 1986. They are Homer Murray (born March 3, 1982) and Luke Murray (born April 1, 1985).
Murray had his four youngest sons with his second wife Jennifer Butler, to whom he was married from 1997 until 2008. They are Caleb “Cal” Murray (born January 11, 1993), Jackson Murray (born October 6, 1995), Cooper Murray (born January 27, 1997), and Lincoln Murray (born May 5, 2005).
Jennifer Butler passed away in 2021. May she rest in eternal peace.
He Has Eight Siblings
Per People, Bill Murray was one of nine children (he has five brothers and three sisters, meaning he has eight siblings in total).
His five brothers are Ed, Brian, Andy, John and Joel, and his three sisters are Nancy, Peggy and Laura. Ed passed away in November 2020 from heart disease.
All of the Murray siblings were born to Edward J. Murray II and Lucille Murray. The couple raised their kids in Wilmette, Illinois.
Murray’s father died of complications from diabetes in 1967, and his mother died of cancer two decades later in 1988.
May Ed, Edward, and Lucille Murray also rest in eternal peace.
One of Murray’s Children Is a Notable Basketball Coach
Bill Murray’s second-oldest son, Luke Murray, is a notable basketball coach.
Per ESPN, Luke was recently appointed as Boston College’s head coach. He was previously assistant coach at UConn.
Before that, he was an assistant under Chris Mack at Louisville and Xavier. He also spent two seasons as an assistant at Towson from 2011 to 2013, having started his college coaching career on the staff at Quinnipiac back in 2007.
Bill Murray has been seen attending multiple basketball games with Luke.
Four of His Siblings Are Actors
Per People, Bill Murray isn’t the only one of the Murray siblings to have become an actor. Brian, Nancy, Joel and John have all taken to the stage or screen.
Brian, who goes by the stage name Brian Doyle-Murray, is undoubtedly the most notable. Alongside Bill, he’s appeared in the likes of 1980’s “Caddyshack,” 1984’s “The Razor’s Edge,” 1988’s “Scrooged,” 1989’s “Ghostbusters II,” and 1993’s “Groundhog Day.” His other credits include 1984’s “Sixteen Candles,” 1989’s “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” 1991’s “JFK,” and 2000’s “Bedazzled” (per IMDb).
Joel is best known for his television roles and has appeared in series like “Mad Men,” “Grand,” “Love & War,” “Dharma & Greg,” “Still Standing,” and “Shameless” (per IMDb).
John has appeared in the likes of “Caddyshack” and “Scrooged” alongside Bill (per IMDb).
Nancy, meanwhile, is a stage actress who has performed one-woman shows portraying historical figures. She also happens to be a nun.
The Other Siblings and Kids Have ‘Normal’ Jobs
Above is a social media post with a picture of Bill Murray (sat next to Dan Aykroyd) with his son Homer on the set of “Ghostbusters.”
Per People, Bill Murray’s other siblings all have (or have had) “normal” jobs.
The late Ed was a stockbroker, senior vice president, and adviser in the financial sector. Andy is a chef and restauranteur. Laura worked in banking for her entire career. Very little public information is known about Peggy, but since she has stayed completely out of the spotlight, she presumably had a “normal” jon.
Also per People, five of Murray’s six sons have “normal” jobs, too.
Homer works as a chef and restaurateur in New York City. Meanwhile, Caleb, Jackson, Cooper, and Lincoln keep their lives so private that they simply must have “normal” jobs.
It should be noted, however, that, while he isn’t an actor per se, Cooper Murray has appeared alongside his father in small roles in the likes of “Moonrise Kingdom” and the Farrelly brothers’ television series “The Now” (per IMDb).
We wish the Murray family well in everything they do.
