Billy Porter has revealed a surprising interaction with Prince William after being hospitalised during his Cabaret run.
In September, the Hunger Games actor announced he would not return to Broadway as the Emcee as he was suffering from a ‘serious case of sepsis’.
While he was intending to return once he was better, Cabaret closed its doors on September 21, a month earlier than scheduled.
Billy, 56, has now revealed that while he was recovering, he received a get-well-soon card from Prince William.
The pair had met previously in South Africa last year, when Billy co-hosted the fourth edition of the Earthshot Prize.
‘He heard that I was ill and he sent me a get-well card,’ he told Hello Magazine. ‘That’s the kind of human being he is.’
Speaking about Prince William, the Pose actor added: ‘He’s very grounded, very kind, very present to everybody around him at all times. You know, it’s a really hard job and it’s just effortless to him.
‘I [felt] so humbled and blessed to host his Earthshot Prize in Cape Town. His kindness and his presence have no bounds.’
Billy’s abrupt end to his Cabaret run came months after he was in the West End version of the show alongside Marisha Wallace.
In a statement released by Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club producer, Adam Speers, he said: ‘It is with a heavy heart that we have made the painful decision to end our Broadway run on September 21.
‘On behalf of all the producers, we’re so honoured to have been able to bring this version of John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff’s important masterpiece, Cabaret, to New York and to have opened the doors to our own Kit Kat Club for the year and a half we have been here.’
‘We wish Billy a speedy recovery and I look forward to working with him again in the very near future,’ he continued.
The NHS describes sepsis as a ‘life-threatening’ condition, which can be hard to spot.
Billy recovered quickly and recently went on ‘date night’ where he hard-launched a new relationship with Eric Anderson, who he was first seen with in July.
He split from Adam Smith after six years of marriage, having met at a dinner party in 2009.
