‘Blue Bloods’ Spin-off Replaces Longtime Reagan Family Member

Donnie Wahlberg at CBS Fest 2025

After 14 seasons of Reagan family dinners, CBS is officially branching out with “Boston Blue,” a new “Blue Bloods” spin-off centered around Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan. But the real twist? The recast of Sean Reagan, Danny’s son; yep, the same Sean we literally watched grow up on screen for over a decade.

Passing the Sean Reagan Torch

Andrew Terraciano, who played Sean from the start, posted back in June of 2024, (as “Blue Bloods” was wrapping) saying that he was, “letting the character go.”

Terraciano later posted again after the finale had aired calling the experience a “fantastic ride.” Now, it seems with the spin-off CBS decided to move in a new direction, aging the character up and giving him a bit of a reset.

Enter Mika Amonsen. He’s stepping into the role as an adult Sean, now a patrol officer working alongside his dad in Boston. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, you might’ve seen him pop up in guest roles on shows like “Suits,” “Reacher,” or “Designated Survivor,” but this is definitely his biggest gig yet.

According to People, “Amonsen’s version of the character will see Sean as a patrolman for the Boston police department, where he will be committed to following in his family’s legacy but on his own terms,” which made recasting necessary.

It all makes sense, but it’s still a bold move considering Terraciano portrayed Sean in 292 out of 293 episodes of “Blue Bloods.” (That’s almost the entire original show.) Let’s just hope fans are ready to meet this version of the next-gen Reagan without flipping the dinner table.

New City, New Cast, Same Reagan Energy

So, what’s “Boston Blue” actually about? The new series picks up with Danny transferring to Boston, where he’s partnered with Detective Lena Silver (played by Sonequa Martin-Green of “The Walking Dead”). Sean’s there too, working as a beat cop; so yeah, expect a father-son dynamic we didn’t get much of in the later years of “Blue Bloods.”

The show’s creators, seem to be going for something that still has that “Blue Bloods” vibe (i.e. the family, the heart, and the crime-fighting), but with a new backdrop and some fresh blood in the mix. Wahlberg even teased the possibility of OGs like Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan making appearances, thanks to that East Coast proximity.

Production already kicked off with a table read on July 8, and Wahlberg’s been hyping the vibe as full of “gratitude and excitement.” Honestly, it seems like “Boston Blue” is less of a reboot and more of a reset; pushing the franchise forward while still honoring the legacy fans love.

Yeah, it might be a little weird seeing someone else as Sean. But if done right, it could be the emotional backbone “Boston Blue” needs. We’ll see if this new chapter delivers when it premieres later this year on CBS.
