After 14 seasons of Reagan family dinners, CBS is officially branching out with âBoston Blue,â a new âBlue Bloods” spin-off centered around Donnie Wahlbergâs Danny Reagan. But the real twist? The recast of Sean Reagan, Dannyâs son; yep, the same Sean we literally watched grow up on screen for over a decade.
Passing the Sean Reagan Torch
Andrew Terraciano, who played Sean from the start, posted back in June of 2024, (as âBlue Bloodsâ was wrapping) saying that he was, âletting the character go.â
Terraciano later posted again after the finale had aired calling the experience a âfantastic ride.â Now, it seems with the spin-off CBS decided to move in a new direction, aging the character up and giving him a bit of a reset.
Enter Mika Amonsen. Heâs stepping into the role as an adult Sean, now a patrol officer working alongside his dad in Boston. If the name doesnât ring a bell, you mightâve seen him pop up in guest roles on shows like âSuits,â âReacher,â or âDesignated Survivor,â but this is definitely his biggest gig yet.
According to People, âAmonsen’s version of the character will see Sean as a patrolman for the Boston police department, where he will be committed to following in his family’s legacy but on his own terms,â which made recasting necessary.
It all makes sense, but itâs still a bold move considering Terraciano portrayed Sean in 292 out of 293 episodes of âBlue Bloods.â (Thatâs almost the entire original show.) Letâs just hope fans are ready to meet this version of the next-gen Reagan without flipping the dinner table.
New City, New Cast, Same Reagan Energy
So, whatâs âBoston Blue” actually about? The new series picks up with Danny transferring to Boston, where heâs partnered with Detective Lena Silver (played by Sonequa Martin-Green of âThe Walking Deadâ). Seanâs there too, working as a beat cop; so yeah, expect a father-son dynamic we didnât get much of in the later years of âBlue Bloods.â
The showâs creators, seem to be going for something that still has that âBlue Bloodsâ vibe (i.e. the family, the heart, and the crime-fighting), but with a new backdrop and some fresh blood in the mix. Wahlberg even teased the possibility of OGs like Tom Selleckâs Frank Reagan making appearances, thanks to that East Coast proximity.
Production already kicked off with a table read on July 8, and Wahlbergâs been hyping the vibe as full of âgratitude and excitement.â Honestly, it seems like âBoston Blueâ is less of a reboot and more of a reset; pushing the franchise forward while still honoring the legacy fans love.
Yeah, it might be a little weird seeing someone else as Sean. But if done right, it could be the emotional backbone âBoston Blueâ needs. Weâll see if this new chapter delivers when it premieres later this year on CBS.
