Despite a messy launch, Borderlands 4 has been a huge success and is already one of the best-selling games of 2025.
Borderlands 4 may have launched to largely positive reviews last month, but it encountered some problems in the immediate aftermath.
The looter shooter had a myriad of performance issues across all formats, although Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford was keen to blame people’s setups on PC. A few weeks later, however, the Switch 2 version was indefinitely delayed, because it required ‘additional development and polish’.
However, none of that has stopped Borderlands 4 being a massive success, with the title topping the sales chart in the US for September.
According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, Borderlands 4 ‘generated the highest launch month dollar sales of any title in franchise history’ following its release on September 12, being nearly 30% higher than the previous best, Borderlands 3.
Not only that, Borderlands 4 has rocketed to the number three spot of 2025’s best-selling games so far in the region, behind NBA 2K26 and Monster Hunter Wilds. Capcom’s role-player was previously the highest-selling, but it’s been overtaken by 2K’s basketball sim this month.
Other new entries on the chart include EA Sports FC 26 at number three, while Ghost Of Yōtei (which launched on October 2, so only the first two days of sales are counted here) managed to hit the number four spot. According to Piscatella, Ghost Of Yōtei’s sales performance was ‘basically flat to that of Ghost Of Tsushima’.

Silent Hill f also entered the chart at number seven, followed by fellow new entries Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. NHL 26, meanwhile, landed at number 12, followed by Digimon Story: Time Stranger and Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2.
Overall, there was a 10% growth in video game spending across the month of September, over the same period last year. Hardware sales were up 24% when compared to a year ago, thanks to the Nintendo Switch 2, which managed to offset declines across the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and original Switch.
However, Piscatella noted that Switch 2 sales ‘declined slightly’ when compared to the previous month. Although this will likely shoot back up again as we approach Christmas.
While it remains to be seen if Borderlands 4 can maintain the pace, next month’s chart will be interesting to see the impact of Battlefield 6 and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The former has already achieved the biggest launch in the franchises’s history, with over seven million copies sold worldwide.
