Amonsen plays Danny Reagan’s (Donnie Wahlberg) in the new CBS series Boston Blue. He took over the role from Andrew Terraciano, who played Sean for 14 seasons on Blue Bloods. The change has left some fans scratching their heads, and some have voiced their resistance to the casting shift on social media. Amonsen is taking the criticism in stride.

“There’s been some negativity, for sure,” Amonsen told <a href=”https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/boston-blues-mika-amonsen-addresses-sean-reagan-backlash-after-recasting/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Us Weekly. “But when I look under those posts that have the negativity, there’s a lot of fans rallying for Sean and people saying that they really enjoyed this character that I’ve created — or my version of character.”

Amonsen is delivering his own take on Sean, who is following in his dad’s footsteps by pursuing a career in law enforcement. But he admits he also wants to be mindful of what came before.

“I definitely felt a ton of pressure at first. I felt the pressure to respect an actor before me because I wanted to respect Andrew the best I could,” he said. “There were even certain visual choices that I made that I wanted to keep in terms of hair styling and certain ways of being [as Sean].”

“I really want to maintain Sean as close as I can in the ways that I do it out of respect for this character that everyone loves — but also the character Andrew built,” he added, noting that he binge-watched later seasons of Blue Bloods to get a feel for what Sean Reagan was all about.

Why was the Sean Reagan role recast on ‘Boston Blue’?

Wahlberg is reprising his Danny Reagan role on Boston Blue, and several other Blue Bloods cast members have appeared on the show. So, why not continue to have Terraciano play Sean?

Boston Blue co-showrunner Brandon Margolis told <a href=”https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/boston-blue-danny-baez-future-recasting-sean-blue-bloods-spinoff-1236554791/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Variety it was simply a time for a change.

“We love Andrew and the work he did over the years on Blue Bloods,” Margolis said. But Boston Blue is telling a new story for the Reagans, which meant the time was right for a fresh face.

“Really, it came down to we’re telling a new chapter in both of their lives,” he explained. “It’s not just Sean who has joined the family business as it were and is turning over this new leaf, but it’s also now Danny Reagan is the father to a cop, which he’s never been before.”

“So there are all these new storytelling lanes to explore,” Margolis continued. “It felt like there was an organic opportunity to bring in a new performance with a new energy, to help dramatize that change. It is the same character, it’s the same relationship, but it’s also completely different. We love what Mika has brought to Sean, this vulnerability, yet this desire to prove himself. It’s just been great to watch it come to life.”

Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Episodes also stream on Paramount+.
