Britney Spears fans are up in arms after she issued an apology to Justin Timberlake on social media.

The Toxic singer, 42, said she was sorry for some things she wrote in her book, and if offence was caused she was ‘deeply sorry’.

In the unexpected turn of events, Britney also praised Justin’s new song, Selfish, while sharing a clip of him and Jimmy Fallon mucking around on US talk show The Tonight Show.

This came despite fans thinking the SexyBack singer 42, snubbed Britney via his new track, which has the same name as her 2011 song.

Taking to social media, Britney said: ‘I wanna apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book.

‘If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about I am deeply sorry…

‘I also wanted to say I am in love with Justin Timberlake’s new song “Selfish” 🌹 It is soo good and how come every time I see Justin and Jimmy together I laugh so hard ???’

In her book, Britney detailed her and Justin’s high-profile relationship in the early 2000s, claiming he pressured her into an abortion.

The pop icon also described how she was painted as the ‘harlot’ who broke the heart of ‘America’s golden boy’ on their break up, and after the following release of Justin’s hit song, Cry Me A River.

In it, a blonde woman is seen cheating on Justin while – as Britney says – ‘he wanders around sad in the rain’.

While she seemingly accepted her unfaithfulness in the relationship, Britney claimed Justin got away scot-free even though he cheated on her ‘several’ times.

Britney said while Justin was happily running around Hollywood, she was ‘comatose in Louisiana’ following the split.

Given all these bombshell revelations in The Woman In Me, released in October, fans were baffled by Britney’s recent change of tack.

‘Britney this is not you,’ wrote X user @farwa887, while @emysbill said: ‘girl noooo.’

‘WHATTT BRITNEY DONT BACK DOWN,’ said @nickianadelray, as @ItsEmpress_X agreed, writing: ‘She doesn’t have to apologise.’

Others commended Britney for her forgiving nature, as @tabirain13 said: ‘Aww she’s doing charity,’ and @ChelseaStanler chimed in with: ‘Britney a generous queen.’

Meanwhile, some worried whether someone might be telling Britney to write the post, as @LeeLovesBey asked: ‘omg do we need to free her again?’

In 2019, fans grew increasingly worried – and vocal – about Britney’s legal guardianship contract.

From 2008 to 2021, Britney’s finances, bodily autonomy, and life was largely controlled by her father Jamie Spears, and a lawyer.

The 2021 release of Framing Britney Spears ramped up pressure to dig into the conservatorship, and the star requested she tell her side of the story in an open court.

Pivotal to the conservatorship’s end was Britney’s testament in June that year, in which she revealed her desire for more children, but said she had been forced onto birth control, and was made to take other medication against her will.

In her memoir, Britney described her 13 years in the conservatorship as ‘abuse’, saying it took away her ‘womanhood’.

Her father ‘taking over everything’ was the ‘worst thing’ that could ‘possibly ever happen’ to Britney’s ‘music, career, and sanity,’ she wrote.

‘I didn’t see a way out,’ she remembered, describing her conservatorship as like Groundhog Day. Britney only endured giving up her freedom to steal precious moments with her children. All the while, her father became a ‘multimillionaire’ from taking it away.

‘At various times I pushed back, especially when my father took away access to my cell phone,’ she remembered.

‘I would be smuggled a private phone and try to break free. But they always caught me. And here’s the sad, honest truth: After everything I had been through, I didn’t have a lot of fight left in me.’

‘After being held down on a gurney, I knew they could restrain my body any time they wanted to. They could’ve tried to kill me, I thought. I started to wonder if they did want to kill me,’ she continued.

‘I began to think that he saw me as put on the earth for no other reason than to help their cash flow,’ she wrote, adding that her father once uttered the words: ‘I’m Britney Spears now.’
