This hidden gem romance drama on Amazon Prime Video will warm your soul on this chilly autumn weekend.
Originally a German-language series, Maxton Hall – The World Between Us, is now a global sensation that has won viewers over everywhere for its endearing romance between a rich heir and a scholarship student, jampacked with vibrant chemistry.
The show stars Damian Hardung and Harriet Herbig-Matten as our modern-day Romeo and Juliet (aka James Beaufort and Ruby Bell).
The story – based on the bestselling book Save Me – is set in an elite private school where there are more scandals than there is studying.
When Ruby stumbles upon an explosive secret that concerns the Beaufort family’s reputation in the hallowed halls, her ambitions of studying at Oxford University are thrown into peril as she becomes entangled in James’ high-end world.
The first season – made up of six episodes – completely blew up when it came out in 2024, ranking number one in 120 territories and quickly becoming one of the streamer’s most popular international shows.
Not only that, it has landed an impressive 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, proving it’s as good as it appears on the tin.
I absolutely loved this series! It was truly amazing, and I couldn’t get enough of it. What really stood out to me was how intimate the show felt every moment between James and Ruby was so raw and genuine,’ RT user ZH wrote.
‘With a fairly classic teen storyline it could have been mediocre another teen drama, but they instead turned it into a lovely, compelling and great series,’ Katherine Z shared.
‘The acting, the chemistry, the banter, the tension… Everything ate My book girlies, THIS SHOW IS A MUST-WATCH. This has everything and much more,’ Waniya S declared.
‘The chemistry between the lead characters, James and Ruby, was incredible,’ Joyce G praised.
‘Amazingly acted, the chemistry between the leading actors is [otherworldly]. Anyone who says this is not a good romance story is a cynic, and anyone who says this is nothing we’ve seen before has too big of a Hollywood -focus,’ Koo K echoed.
‘It was absolutely beautiful. As someone who never watches any TV shows that are dubbed and the lip syncing isn’t in sync I devoured this season in less than a day. Acting was beautiful, chemistry between characters incredible, you just get sucked into the storyline,’ Jo-Marie Laura C posted.
Critics were less taken by the show, with Digital Spy saying it didn’t quite meet the standard of other teen shows that have come before it and Decider warning it is ‘nothing we haven’t seen before.’
What other Amazon Prime Video dramas should you be watching?
The Summer I Turned Pretty: If you need your next romance fix after Maxton Hall and have somehow been living under a rock, then this love triangle between three childhood friends is the one for you!
Daisy Jones and the Six: Loosely based on Fleetwood Mac, this romance series follows the explosive love story between the leads of the titular band, whose lives are turned upside down after their music blows up.
We Were Liars: Maybe not so much romance but certainly a coming-of-age story, this psychological thriller will leave you hooked from start to finish with a jaw-dropping twist.
So viewers will have to decide for themselves whether this one is quite their cup of tea.
Now the first three episodes of the second season have dropped; episodes will drop every Friday until November 28.
Discussing what to expect from the new episodes, Hardung told Marie Claire Australia: ‘We really brought it to the screen and I feel like we didn’t hold back… what it means to lose a parent in a way, and to lose your love and to fight for that love that you think you lost.
‘It’s just something that’s very, very close to my heart and that I wanted to contribute to and I wanted to do justice.’
Maxton Hall – The World Between Us seasons one and the first three episodes of season two are streaming now on Prime Video.
